whatever the coating was it was mostly sugar and didnt have much flavor of its own. Underneath was a thick cream and the filling was pretty much what you would find in an apple pie but smaller chunks. The cake was leaning towards dense but was still spongy. Over all the flavores were somewhat subtle. Not too sweet. Not too much cinnamon.

The only times cakes are style over substance is when its one of those sculpture cakes that are 90% fondant and/or are just stupidly annoying to eat. The apple is just a cute little presentation that doesn't really affect the quality of the cake parts themselves.
