My parents were decent/serviceable cooks when I was growing up so I've long had the opinion that food isn't worth eating unless it tastes good. I also have the opinion that if you have to rely upon someone else to cook meals for you then you're either subhuman or some kind of invalid. The combination of those two ideas led me to wanting to cook well.

my sister would often make deserts at home, after my sister moved out for college when I was 15, I always found myself yearning for brownies/apple pie but didn't want to be a faggot and overwork my mom, so I decided to try it out myself. Farther from big cities and wealthy suburbs pickup trucks are often a necessity (with how large and spread out the US is compared with Euro countries) and imply that you're self sufficient, you know your way around a toolbox, and that you aren't some limp wrist city fag. In more metropolitan areas pickup trucks imply blue collar/"workingmen" like vans as you said. While some guido or spic driving around Long Island in his work truck is not very sexy even to the women in that area, a country boy with a pick up truck (the can get pretty pricy) is practically a requirement in more rural areas. My grandparents were Italians who immigrated to Toronto in the 50s. My Nonno was a grocer, and my Nonna cooked a meal every Sunday that was the equivalent to my friends' Thanksgivings. I used to go to the store as a kid and see the hanging beef and boxes of chicken feet, and my uncles would make me a mortadella sandwich.

My mom and dad learned all the old country recipes (northern Italy -- lasagna, polenta, risotto, roasts, broths, minestras, porchettas, rabbit, pizzas), and I looked over their shoulders, asking what they were doing, from the time I was about 12 or 13.

It's not my job, but it's been my principal passion since then, and now I feed my own family.

Not so much poverty but being a cheapskate in generals.

Why would you conclude that? Maybe they were't fortunate enough to be raised in a cooking family and are genuinely impressed by your skills. These girls can be taught.

The old-country women didn't love cooking, FYI. They did it for survival. Learned how to turn bones into soup because they were poor. It's no wonder, with Uber Eats and deli counters in every supermarket, that this survival instinct has dulled. Our grandmothers would have done the same thing.

You do realise the old country women are literally just women in Europe right. Like, my grandmother is literally alive and makes me shepherd's pie and fish pie n shit.

Yeah, because they lived in different times. I'm sure some of them would have taken it up as a hobby like denizens of /ck/, but if they had money and Uber Eats, sadly, most of them wouldn't have.

Just my theory. My Nonna cooked every Sunday, but it came out when she was old that she actually kind of hated it.

Working at a grilled sandwich shop did it, and then reading Kitchen Confidential did a little bit more to get more creative.

I mean yeah, no shit, they DID stop cooking in countries which weren't absolutely fucking trashed by the Second World War. That's why in America you got that huge generation gap in cooking skills as boomers leapt on the instant meal bandwagon. In the UK things were bad for the working classes, too. The middle class kept it up because we had the free time, I think. My granny did it as a kind of way of proving how English she was, just like dropping her Indian accent.

not even meming but I just grew up. My gf still does most of the cooking but i cook 2 or 3 times per week. I enjoy it I'm just slow at prep and often come home late from work. Grilling was my gateway into preparing my own food, then i really got into just winging it on a lot of dishes because it's way easier than most people think. My favorite dish used to be spiced bread... I'd toast up some buttered bread and cheese covered in clubhouse spices...

>What inspired you to learn how to cook?
I have been fascinated by knives and have been collecting them for 35 years (since I was ten) and I got into cooking because I wanted to fuck around with big sharp blades more. You cant really use a pocket knife or camp knife often enough to scratch that itch.

Yes, agreed. We're on the same page. My grandparents were among the impoverished people whose homes got trashed (my other grandparents Maltese, same shit). That's why my parents always thought it was funny that their literal poverty food (risotto and polenta) was being served in $30 plates in high-end restaurants in the 80s and 90s. In Italy in those days, rice and corn eaters were the dregs. Wealthy folks ate bread.

I'm gay (yes it matters in this case) and and needed to change my diet because it was really difficult to clean myself out thanks to my atrocious eating habits. Few too many "shitty" accidents for my liking, even if I had "prepared" a lot beforehand. Only way to get a good diet was to cook myself.
