they dont even work, ice cools drinks by floating i.e the warmest part of the liquid and by melting as it takes a large amount of energy i.e heat to melt ice. it takes as much energy to turn ice at 0c into water at 0c as it does to turn water at 0c to water at 70c, phase changes take massive amount of energy

Metal gains heat very easily, as you know from cooking with it. So if you put it in something even a little bit warm it just loses all its coolness right away.
Ice and water in general has a really really high resistance against temperature change relative to most things you use on a regular basis, so it's very good for cooling things. That's part of why "liquid cooling" is such a meme for computers.

Having a chem degree and being technically correct doesn't mean you're not also a dumbass.

For the rest of you idiots:
Whisky rocks have about 1/10th the cooling power of ice cubes. Latent heat of fusion of an ice cube (i.e. the energy it absorbs from the drink to melt completely) is about 330 J, whereas it only takes 20 J from the drink to bring an ice cube from -10 to 0 C. Granite is about the same, for the same 1cm cube it absorbs 20 J from the drink for the same temperature change.

>> No.13402633

>>13400966
Lemme explain more clearly.
Suppose the ice cube has a diameter of 110% of your wiskey level. How much of a difference does floating make then? None.
Or simply put, consider the limit whiskey:ice -> 0. If your ice cubes can significantly float in your whiskey, you just poured too much fucking whiskey.

When whisky stones were a tradition Scots were drinking unaged 'water of life'. Hell it was probably distilled on the back of a traveling wagon ducking HM's constabulary. You can cut some of the awful flavor of that moonshine by chilling it.
In modernity when your whisky isn't shit you really have no reason to be attempting to dull its flavor.

Whisky tastes like shit. Alcohol in general tastes like shit. You're not more sophisticated because you enjoy the taste of oak resin and it doesn't matter if you serve it at sub zero temperatures or suck it straight from Johnny Walker's undersized pecker. You're just a pretentious shit trying to compensate for something.
Meanwhile, pic related costs less and gets you there much faster. Doesn't matter if you drink it on the rocks or not either because your liver won't be able to tell the difference. And if you're still trying to measure your dick in terms of how much suffering you have to endure to finish a glass of your swill of choice, then look no further because it tastes like drinking leaded gasoline and is probably about as effective at fueling your car.
