I've made pasta plenty of times but I'd rather spend the bit extra on good quality ingredients to go into the sauce rather than the pasta itself because the sauce is what makes or breaks pasta dishes

Why would that be? I haven't made it with fresh pasta, but what would be the difference? You mix the pasta into the sauce after they're cooked. I made ravioli the other day, but I did not roll it near thin enough. It took forever to cook, and while I still ate it, I'm definitely ready to buy a pasta rolling machine. I made both semolina and all purpose pasta to see the difference. Once the semolina pasta was cooked through it was way better, but the all purpose flour was much easier to work with. Both were enjoyable for the ravioli, but I think the pasta roller is well worth it.
