13295136 No.13295136 [Reply] [Original]

Anyone just gradually find meat less and less appealing? I made myself a nice, USDA prime steak yesterday. First meat in 2 weeks. Looked forward to it, got some nice wine, made haricots verts and sweet potato mash on the side. And halfway through it I just realized... this is fucking gross, I can't do this anymore. It's in a ziploc bag in the fridge. When I was a kid I loved meat. Now, as an adult approaching middle age who lives for sport and the outdoors, I only eat it because obsessing over protein is a pain in the ass otherwise.

Why doesn't /ck/ talk about the rational middle ground: vegetarianism? Why does it have to be about ideology or whatever? Can we just admit meat isn't good?

No. Meat and fish are the best foods there is.

If you don't feel like eating it, don't eat it.

Tastes change as you get older. Kind of like how little kids will gladly eat disgusting junk food like those vending machine pies but at a certain point in your life they become revolting.

Same goes for meat. Some people never grow up though. Enjoy LARPing as a crow scavenging roadkill on the side of the highway. So edgy and metal dooood.

I'm going to go choke down some whey protein now.

Hey OP,
i was in the same position 15 years ago. Vegeterian because i just dont want be a part of the brutaly massslaughtering. The animals are not raised and hold the way they deserved.
Saw some documentations about this made my decission even easier.
I hate Eggs (disgusting) and i didnt need honey becaus...sweet.
Every type of seafood was ok for me; i fucking love this shit.
But i´ve craved every single day something i could not named.
After 2,5 Years i started to go full frontal...Vegan! And 8 weeks later i collapsed and was brought to the ER.
My Doc said, that nearly anything blood needed to be called blood was missing in mine.

Long story short, nowaday i am a very picke eater when it comes to Meat. Luckily i life in an small town with a lot of local Producers.
These Animals have a good, happy life with only one bad Day. And you know what?
This is totaly ok for me.
Paying nearly the 4th. of the price you have to pay for some cheap shit meat. But then only once every two weeks or so a realy good piece of meat.

PS:
Sorry for my bad english. As you can guess, english is not my native language.

I find steak tartare tasteless. Veal is uninteresting. I only appreciate chicken if the skin is properly rosted. Pork has to be roasted/seared too. Roast beef I like, but only cold and with gribiche sauce. Hamburgers' meat would be pointless alone.

In fact, I no longer enjoy most of meat products. Most of them don't have the taste appeal of well cooked, well seasoned, clever vegetable food.

Lamb/mutton and charcuterie have no equivalent. Offal are generally great because of how they are prepared. Most of other meats are just lazy attempts at taste, with unnecessary cruelty.

Since it seems many people are misunderstanding me I'd like to just say one more time for clarity: Meat does not taste good and people only eat it because of illogical adherence to "the old ways" in no small part pushed by massive multi billion dollar agribusiness interests that want you to think you're less of a man, or you're some sort of political radical, if you're not horking down a pound or more of something that simply DOES. NOT. TASTE. GOOD.

I have no bone to pick with people who abstain from meat for religious or moral reasons but I don't think anyone really needs any of that when you just consider that objectively eating meat is not done for pleasure, but simply out of a dumb habit held over from pre-agricultural days.

I think, its more a matter of taste for you.
Ok, i have some moral inspired reasons, i wont deny that.
But when we broke it down to just the fact of taste...organic raised meat is realy way better than the cheap shit.
I can also like the taste of meat and doesnt need it every week. For me it is something special.

Yeah I was at that stage for the last 10 years, 95% of the meat I eat would come from various small independent farms, biodynamic or whatever. "Special occasions". Well at some point you realize "special occasions" are supposed to be for enjoying and you know what I don't enjoy? Good guess! The answer is meat.

It really annoys me because I went through a lot of effort to find a tenderloin (not to be confused with loin) of biodynamic, berkshire pig, I finally "scored" and I've got it in the freezer right now. And I realize now that I'm not going to enjoy it, because the whole thing was just a lie. I guess I'll force myself to eat it before it gets gross in there, but the effort was pointless.

If you want to keep believing that you enjoy something that objectively isn't good, then you're free to do so. I don't look down on mormons or moonies or falun gong or wahhabis. Nah. I'm in my mid-thirties and meat is more important than ever for me. Probably doesn't help that I'm hungry skelly mode though. If you're fat you can obviously get by for a very long time without it. For me, if I even just go a day or two without eating any meat it feels like I'm dying. When I was younger I could get by eating instant noodles or easy mac or something like that and not have a problem, but now my body is a lot quicker to start fucking up if I'm not getting actual nutritional substance in my stomach.

There is a difference between eating something because you have no choice, and eating something because you like it.

I think you'll find if you watch your macros that "I'm dying" feeling isn't really a thing. Trouble is if you watch your macros it turns out to actually be a pain in the ass to hit your protein requirements if you just "wing it", you really need to supplement a lot of the time.

They aren't. Your dissonance towards the subject speaks volumes tho.

The answer to the vegan push was more sustainable more humane methods of farming, you see just as much as there is activism on the vegan side there is also for people who still want to enjoy meat. The biggest issue is that people were eating far too much meat to the point it got us into a cluster fuck of industrialized farming of animals.

I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, but I only eat meat maybe twice a week, and I make it count, I ignored the vegan crowed and focused on the other side, sure I spend a little more on my meat products by going to a butcher, but I also take trips out to farms and get it really cheap, and I know where it's coming from.

Yeah, actually now that I think about it, I've been unable to go to the gym for 2 months because I severely sprained my ankle running on a dirt trail in September, I've got no exercise lately, I cancelled my thanksgiving visit to family to work on a work project that's been backlogged for some time, and I'm just getting over the flu so I've barely even been outside for the last couple of weeks. The symptoms all make sense, it just doesn't feel like I'm "sad" or anything. It all feels totally normal except that things I'm supposed to "enjoy" actually seem pointless and almost ridiculous. Even looking at porn I'm supposed to enjoy, I try to jerk off and it's like, what is this shit, who does this, who is this woman and why is she doing that. I'm not even sure when the last time I jerked off was, probably a week. I actually tried to make a special effort to jerk off yesterday and got distracted. Hours later I was like "wasn't I supposed to jerk off" and then shrugged and continued with shitposting.

Weird.

The thing about lack of sexual pleasure is especially worrying. That's the one symptom everyone with depression mentions.
I should say, I'm using "depression" as a blanket term for any of dozens of illnesses, some mental and some physical. You'd need a proper check up and blood work to accurately diagnose yourself.
