i'm not a vegan and i don't believe a vegan diet is ideal since it absolutely requires you to take supplements, but a fruitarian diet like the people in op followed is even extreme for veganism. it's possible to get enough fat/protein/calories on a vegan diet and stave off health issues with supplements, though i'd expect less people to care about vegan diets once lab-grown meat is improved and widely available since it won't really have the same moral issues which drive most people to veganism in the first place.
