Thoughts on Indian food, and where it ranks relative to other national/ethnic cuisines?

Heavily overrated by those who know nothing about food.
It’s fine, it’s nice once in a while, but it’s not even close to many other cuisines.
The overuse of spice is one of the biggest memes lately. We get it, you can handle heat, now can we go back to true flavors?

Like most ethnic cuisines the original culture continues to consume it not out of desire but need and tradition. Hipsters hop on it because it is trendy.

Need, tradition, and what's trending on twitter are not legitimate criteria for evaluating how good food tastes.

this. a coworker gifted me a bag of some suriname curry and i keep thinking of using it every time when i make rice chicken in the pan, but i just can't bring myself to do it. i just think about the nice chicken flavor the rice will get from the chicken, about the sweetness of the carrots, the flavor of the white wine and the fresh parsley, the milky smell of the parmesan. it'd be just such a shame for all of that to get lost in spice mix #5

Turmeric is absolutely disgusting, and the Indian places in my city love to douse that shit on everything. I've never thought, "Oh, I'd better get Indian takeout instead of Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, or Mediterranean."

Probably right below tex-mex. I'm a spice freak so a little bit of tomatoes and onions sautéed in olive oil plus meat, garam masala, green chili peppers, red chili flakes, curry powder, and cayenne makes a lovely curry if you deglaze with chicken/beef stock. Serve over white rice and sweat whole you eat.

Indians barely eat meat.

>> No.13269062

The issue is that all the hipsters jump on the trend, but they don't eat real indian food. Despite how much it's advertised here in the west, things like butter chicken or tikka masala are rarely made at home in India.

Plus a lot of the nuances of Indian food are lost, cause hipsters don't want to put work or effort into there food, they just want the best image for social media so lost of complex spice flavors get boiled down to generic hot Indian curry mix.

As for >>13268474, frankly the Indian places in your city sound like they suck, and probably over use turmeric cause its "ethnic" and they want to appeal to the crowd who thinks it's a magical far east cure all.

Seriously people need to stop over praising Indian food cause it's different than the usual stuff they eat.

It's pretty much GOAT for eating cheap shit that taste good while being filling and nutritious. I'm not talking recipes with meat but things like aloo gobi, dal, saag, making roti and naan. It's a great way to eat lots of veggies and get lots of protein from vegetarian sources while being inexpensive. Some of it is a bit time consuming but I would rather spend some time in the kitchen than just eat plain beans and rice.

I thought so too until I went to Hershey Park years ago. Their milk chocolate has a vomit like after taste. I didn't taste it in the krackle, mr goodbar, dark chocolate, or specialty kisses. I would taste it in milk chocolate kisses and bars though.

Also Hershey Park is a better park than the Universal Parks in Florida or any of the Disney Parks especially if you like coasters. Might be even better than Busch Gardens Virginia for coasters as well.
