Like all sausage, it needs to be cooked on low temp and turned constantly so it doesn't burn too bad. I pan fry mine in butter and finish them with hot sauce in the pan at the end. Most don't cook them long enough when frying and that's why people boil them. They take time. I put diced raw onions and mustard on mine. A classic. Cheese and chili work too. >How do you guys cook your hotdogs?
I have a hotdog chef I employ on a piece-work basis.
He keeps a cart equipped with a steam-table located conveniently outside my apartment building. Anytime I want a hotdog, I simply pop outside, pay him for the time he spends preparing the hotdog (combined with material fees) and he hands one over almost immediately.
In order for this enterprise to meet his financial needs, I allow him to sell hotdogs to other building residents and passers-by, but he knows on which side his bread is buttered.

raw like italian sausage, you can boil them (almost poaching, actually). take it off. dry, and do the grill/frying bit.

but, in my country, your grills are different. we can roast italian sausage with coal just with a greater distance. it works, in theory, similar to the direct/indirect heat mechanism, but not moving the coal
