Get a basic understanding to the point that you know the names of and difference between every type of wine you carry.
e.g. Pinot noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are both dry reds but most people know the difference when they taste them and don't want the guy they're asking for a recommendation to not know the difference.
Basic food pairings. I wouldn't worry too much but you'll get some people coming in who're making a nice dinner and heard that you should pair your wine.
Remember the tasting notes of your best sellers.
Remember to try a various range of wines if you get the time and really think about what it tastes like to you. If you think "hmm this one tastes a little like plums" and you tell that to a customer that's likely what they'll taste even if they wouldn't have previously (the power of suggestion) and think you really know what you're talking about.
If someone wants a suggestion on a new wine, probe them a bit to see what they like and suggest something middle-uppermiddle price range. Make more than one suggestion of slightly differing price range (but close enough in range that they don't think you're looking down on them by giving them a cheap out). Some people get catty if you suggest a cheap wine, even if its good, some get embarrassed if you suggest an expensive wine. Middle of the price range typically makes everyone happy.
Just try your best and know you won't please everyone. You'll get better at it as time goes on.
There's plenty of pairing infographics and tasting notes all over if you just search em up.

They probably wouldn't care. He's not applying to be a sommolier or anything, he'll learn.

This is a contraction of ''got to''. I have expert knowledge and would have shared it all with you had it not been for your mistake. You're doomed.

Agreed. Do you think they will bother a minimal training for him?

Besides the obvious, here's the register and its functions, don't sell to people underage? Maybe.
It's hard to know, depends on the business they work for I suppose.
Smaller shops with tight margins are probably going to care more about customer retention and go the extra mile to make sure their employees don't make them look bad.
Couldn't really say unless I knew whoever hired him.
OP hasn't really given any supplemental details so for all I know they could just be working register in the liquor department of a grocery store. I went off of the assumption that it's a mom and pop type place.
Place I go to seems to train their employees well, or they're just really good at bullshitting me, I'm fairly gullible.

This is a lot of good information.
I will save this as copypasta for work.

That wasn't me. But I will heed your warning.

Craigslist. I called them up same day, set up a meeting yesterday and they gave me the job on the spot. I told them straight up I am a noob. I am willing to learn though.

>>13179177
Is it possible to be a sommolier? I geunienly like cooking and this seems like a good class to prestige into.

>>13179239
But yeah im just working register at this fancy wine store. It is a mom and pop place from what the owner told me.

What are some notable wines I should try out?

It's actually 'Sommelier', sorry about that one. Of course its possible, takes a lot of work though. Working in a wine store is a good place to learn a lot about wine, it will take knowing A LOT before you could work anywhere somewhat decent as a Somm. but honestly just build up the knowledge/confidence and apply at a restaurant that's looking for one.
You can also gain a certification that'll make it a lot easier for a restaurant to consider it. I don't know much about the ins and outs of that but I'm sure you could find someone who does.
