I don't understand uncrustables. Crusts on sliced white bread are so soft and mild that they might as well not exist. Who the fuck bit into a PB & J sandwich and decided that the edge of the bread had too much texture and taste? Also how busy/lazy do you have to be that you don't have time to make a pb&j sandwich?

They were initially targeted to children, many of whom are picky and have different tastes than adults. I was actually given a test sample by a Smucker's rep who came to my school to conduct market research. I imagine they also sell well because some parents are too busy to make sandwiches for their kids' lunches, which is a consequence of various economic forces. And of course because Americans really like sweet stuff adults buy them as well. I suspect that the fact that the thing has a filled pastry shape with no opening for the jelly and peanut butter to escape might mean that it is less messy to pack and ship.
