I don't have a particular favorite, but I typically go for single barrel bourbons, or something a little hotter. I've had scotch that I really like as well. I try to avoid blended whiskies. At the moment I've really been enjoying Stagg Jr, I like the bite.

It's a good one, but not worth the price when you consider that there are many others that are as good or better for cheaper (Knob Creek, for instance). Bourbon is a product made by the common man for the common man, and if you're paying more than $40 for a fifth, you're wasting your money.

Not the anon you are responding to, but living close to the bourbon trail does have it's advantages. Several of the more connected liquor stores have raffles and special events where you can access harder to find stuff.
There's a few online groups where you can bid or trade for these as well.

Horst and Ben are a little patronizing when they talk about American whiskey, especially when they're comparing it to Scotch, but other than that they seem cool. Pic related is their American whiskey vs. Scotch video and I'm pretty sure those are their favorites in both genres on the tables.

Like anything, going for the lowest price usually results in being left with a shit product. With bourbon prices, though, there's a magical number that's low, but not too low: $16.91. That's equal to one dollar per shot/serving in a fifth. The best cheap bourbons should be priced around that.
