Mate, I grew up farming towns where you can count the amount of minorities on your hand, and we also experienced the slow disappearance of trick-or-treaters. My grandparents buy candy every year, and no one ever comes.

We still have kids around here, but they just don't go trick-or-treating. Not because of safety. Not because of paranoia about the candies being poisoned/having razors.

But because kids don't want to go trick-or-treating anymore (they're glued into electronic media), or the parents can't be arsed to walk/drive them around. Hell, our neighbors just bought their children candy for Halloween. That's literally it.

A lot of people really want it to be minorities or crazies or whatever, so they have something physical and visceral to blame.
Because "less people give a fuck anymore" is not only boring, it's also only a problem for those who still have fucks to give.

But we have churches, elementary-high school, moose/eagles/etc. lodges, the town fair, and the various annual events and such that you'd expect of a farming town with a population of a few thousand.

I went trick-or-treating when I was young, everyone walked and dressed, and there were tons of us on the street. As I got older, people transitioned to using cars for each street, then each house, and now are just doing it less and less.

It's too small of a town for anything to have really gone to shit (it's as peaceful as it has always been), and the population has been growing slightly over the years, so it's not like families stopped living here.

People just kind of gave up on Halloween, as well as less and less people attending those annual local events.

No doubt cellphones and vidya games have greatly contributed to the lack of trick or treaters nowadays but the fact is that in communities bordering predominantly Black areas have been subject to hordes of Blacks being literally bussed in on Halloween.

I see the school busses every year from Such & Such Baptist Church in Detroit parked at the strip mall with dozens of kids being off-loaded and this has turned off residents from taking part in Halloween, which back in my day (I’m 52) used to be a LOCAL thing where people knew the kids standing on their porch as they were neighbors and went to school with their own kids.

Now its mobs of strangers from out of town (including adults!) and many aren’t even wearing costumes. Fuck that.

Halloween really has morphed into something different that I remember as an 80s kid.

I think there was one erroneous report of bladed apples one year in he 80s and it's been a fear of parents ever since.
Last year we had around 20 kids, all accompanied by flocks of parents, most in cars. I live in a trailer court. Parents drive their kids from trailer to trailer for candy. Our homes are like 20ft apart. And they drive them.
I'm only 31 and when I was young my cousins and I roamed unfamiliar neighborhoods well after dark, the oldest of us only 12, and it was some of the most fun I had as a kid.

Halloween has been stolen from children by extended-adolescence millennials. It’s much more about “sexy whatever” costumes and adult parties than trick or treating anymore. So, trick or treating is an after thought, and that combined with anxious parenting (even though nearly all Halloween poisonings have been by parents themselves) means that kids go to events and fairs rather than out. Unless your a poor minority, in which case you don’t even bother with a costume and go trick or treating in rich white neighborhoods.
