/ck/, what are the condiments and toppings to put on a burger, and what shit should you definitely not put on?
Does cheese go on a burger? Does bacon, mayo?

whatever you want, the beauty of the burger is its opportunity for free expression

I don't really think there's a should involved.
However, mayo and pickles can go and stay go.

Yes, cheese goes on a burger. When added most people refer to it as a "cheese burger". The traditional toppings are lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a close fourth is onions. Burgers are like pizza, in that you can put pretty much anything you want on them if it works, but traditionally it's mayo/mayo-based sauce/ketchup/mustard. For me, pickles, tomatoes, and mayo are pretty much required, unless it's something like a bbq burger - which still absolutely needs tomatoes and pickles.

the only thing I would avoid is sweet or sour things, or something way too liquid that compromises the ability of the burger to be eaten in-hand like it's meant to.

I know y'all are probably too cultured for this, but try topping the patty with some chili con queso, then building the burger with pickled jalapenos, fresh onion and thin shredded iceberg lettuce.

Pickles and mayo are the Max Martin and Dr. Luke of burger toppings.

lots of good toppings, depending on what flavor you want. good options: big ol green chile, with jack. avocado. feta. green onions chopped into burger. almost all condiments. there is a burger place in berkeley/oakland, barney's, has some of those on menu. also big ass onion rings.

For me it's egg and fried banana

Bun
Very light mayo, about a third of what gets spread onto a bun usually
Light ketchup/mustard
Very light honey mustard
Two slices of lettuce
Cheese
Thin patty
Cheese
Thin patty
Two slices of lettuce
Very light mayo, like on the top bun

And that's a usual burger that I make for my breaks. I like splitting the mayo between both buns for taste.

cheese only belongs on a burger if there are no leafy or watery vegetables (i.e. lettuce & tomato)
you either want fresh or greasy
the two cannot coexist
