12929331 No.12929331 [Reply] [Original]

Inspired by a post in another thread.

Why do Americans say “bring me...” in restaurants? Or the other one I often hear with American friends “I want...”?

Seriously, it’s fucking excruciatingly rude. When friends say “bring me” especially, my blood just curdles with cringe. Why can’t you just politely say “please may I have...”, or “I would like..”? Also, why don’t you thank the wait staff when you hand back the menu? Most of my American friends just shove the menu back as though the waiter/waitress doesn’t even exist. Also when the food comes - just stare at the plate when it’s put down as though looking for something to complain about - no “thank you”, nothing.

I love you guys but you embarrass me when we go out to eat, seriously.

Most don't even hand it back. They leave it on the table for the server to pick it up. I grab them all and hand them over in a bunch. I also pick up as I go, I don't leave a mess. I'll pick up after other ls at the table too unless they make a big deal of it. I'll also organize the dirty dishes and trash. I hate people and think it should be a requirement to work in food service, especially fast food, for 6 months minimum so asshats know how to treat one another and understand how exhausting it can be to do your job only to have the receiving end of a tongue lashing from unappreciative assholes who have no clue how hard it is.

Funny how garbage men, undertakers, and soldiers don't virtue signal about how everyone should have to 'experience how hard their job is' but overpaid food-carriers seem to go home after putting in another lazy day at the welfare hole and just violently type on their keyboard about how much free shit everyone else has to give them until they fall asleep.

They don't have to deal with the general public. And you don't know what virtue signaling means. L2readingcomprehension and graduate high school before coming back.

Yeah, same. I also gather menus and always give a very sincere ‘thank you’ or I say something like ‘oh, that looks delicious’ when it arrives or whatever. If there’s something wrong, I’ll say something politely too. I just don’t get the “bring me..” one the most, though. It just kills me when they say it. Sounds absolutely terrible.

No, I know. I get that it’s probably because of a more American approach to earning respect and not getting it just because you feel entitled to it. I can appreciate and admire that but I’ve come across Americans who DON’T do this, too - usually older and more accomplished. This behaviour seems actually to be recent. So yeah, maybe it’s just an example of freewheeling American outlooks, or the younger generation of Americans have been badly raised.

garbage men get paid well and have a strong union, undertaker is a skilled position that also pays quite well, and soldiers are constantly bitching that "you don't know what it's like unless you've been in combat, man". your analogy is shit.

Maybe Americans don't differentiate between "want" and "would like" in situations like this. Please and thank you would mean more to be than worrying about how they phrase the part where they say what they want.

To add, my 8 year old son has never worked, so he doesn't understand why sometimes food takes long. That's literally how most adults are. That's probably how you are, since you got so defensive and then brought up jobs completely unrelated to what I was talking about.
