12917852 No.12917852 [Reply] [Original]

Everyone morning I have 1 shot of vodka before work.
After work from 5 to 9 I have 6 additional shots of vodka.

Is this alcoholism?

>> No.12917860

>>12917852
I'm thinking yes. I did the same thing for years and I was still shaking and throwing up in the bathroom all day. Do you get sick of you don't drink in the morning?

>> No.12917881

>>12917860

The one time I didnt have a morning shot I got the shakes really bad.
At the moment I can only go 10 hours at a time without a shot.
Used to be 4 hours, then I increased to 6, then 8.. and now I'm here.

>> No.12917895

>>12917881
Well you're heading in the right direction at least. Alcohol withdrawal is horrendous and really dangerous. Do you drive to work? You really need to ween yourself down and take a break for a few months for your body to reset. It's really difficult to do on your own, I had to go away for a few months. My life is much better now than it was a couple years ago.

>> No.12917907

Depends. Can you go a week without drinking anything? If the answer is "no" then yes, you're an alcoholic.

>> No.12917914

>>12917895

I tried a few times before I got on buspar (an analytic) and lamotrigine (anti-seizure).
The trouble I'm having is slowing down after work. I went from 4 shots back up to 6, and did a 9 the other day which I felt terrible about.

I drive to work prior to taking my first shot. One right before I go in to the office to get me through the day.

Any suggestions for keeping myself occupied after work so I can get down to 1-2? After I get used to that it should be a breeze.

Short answer: Yes, Absolutly.

Idk man they tell you it's really important to have a hobby when you get clean so you can do something constructive with your time. Idle hands are the devil's playground. Family support was key for me. I've got a woman who loves me and supported me through all of it. I've got a son too who counts on me so that responsibility helps keep me straight.

>> No.12917935

If you have to ask, you most likely are.

>> No.12917938

OP I feel like this is a problem. I personally cannot go more than 3 to 4 days without a drink, I don't drink heavily but I get an urge to drink really really bad after 3 to 4 days; it's almost as if I think to myself "look you've gone 3 days, just have a drink!"

Fuck bros; alcohol is so bad.

>from 5 to 9 I have 6 additional shots
It takes you 4 hours to drink 6 shots?
Man, I'd say you're at a good maintenance/functional level. When I drank, I'd slam a water glass of chilled vodka in like 4 seconds.
I never drank in the morning or before work.

>> No.12918223

>>12917852
I did the math and apparently I typically have 5-6 "shots" of mug vodka before work, and then another 15-20 when I get home. I'm completely functional and work a 45-50 hour week. So no, I don't think you're an alcoholic.

>> No.12918246

You may not be physically addicted to alcohol, yet, but you clearly have at least a mental dependency and you're drinking several times more than the recommended maximum.

Definitely second having a hobby. A lot of people start drinking because they're bored. It's a very common issue with the elderly who no longer have jobs and only a little family.
And a lot of people fall off the wagon because the days are suddenly really fucking long. You need something to do. Preferably something that makes you leave the house, by the way, so not just video games or Netflix. Or maybe those if you go to the library or a coffee place or something for it. Don't sit around at home all day.
If you can't quit cold turkey you may want to try switching to beer instead of hard liquor. I'm not personally familiar enough with tapering like this to give very specific advice on it, but most patients I've had to tried it found it easier to pace themselves with brewskies rather than shots. Makes sense to me.
And don't buy more than you "need" for one day at a time.

>>12917938
This is mental rather than physical dependency. That doesn't make it less real.

>>12918223
There's nothing in the definition of "alcoholic" about being able to hold a job or not.
You are very obviously dependent on alcohol and that makes you an alcoholic.

>>12919515
Definitely a red flag. Interestingly, many people seem to start out drinking in the morning because they think they have withdrawals when what they actually have is a hangover which would have gone away if they had some water and waited a few hours. Eventually they do get real withdrawals of course. It's a shame.

And if you wait too long before having that curative shot, if you somehow manage to sleep for a full night for once, the shaking and vomiting will be so bad that that first glass (no longer a shotglass of course, a bigger one) goes flying out your nose when you try to drink it.
And even though it burns like fire both in your nose and all the way up into your eyes, and the vodka gets in your laptop and shorts it out, your first thought is "Oh no, I wasted a glass of vodka"

Any tips on better sleep? I had insomnia long before I started drinking.
I hate just being awake in bed with my thoughts, but all the tips like just go to sleep at the same time, or make your room really dark dont help.
That is one of the main reasons I like drinking so much, I can just go to bed and fall asleep in a minute.

>> No.12920891

>>12920836
I'm sure you've figured this out already but drinking doesn't improve sleep. At all.
There are some drugs that can help you sleep, many of carry the same issues as alcohol. Metatonin is the best and "mildest" one if it works for you. And probably the easiest to get a prescription for since it's not something people abuse.
Other than that it's just the same advice I'm sure you've managed to find already; decent diet, no smoking or coffee or alcohol especially in the last few hours before bedtime, exercise, mental stimulation such as reading a book or doing crosswords or whatever...
And don't leave the computer or TV on in your bedroom. Try to have as little light and as little noise as possible.

Another overlooked aspect is the subconscious association with the bedroom and the bed; If you do a lot of other things besides sleep in your bed you'll be less relaxed in it when it comes time to actually sleeping.
I don't mean sex. I mean using your laptop or phone for hours in your bed, or even just reading.
Move all activities to the livingroom and dedicate the bedroom to sleep entirely.
This also applies when you wake up. Don't stay in bed for a couple hours on your day off browsing 4chan or watching TV etc.
Get up and go sit in a chair or sofa for that.

Cutting down on drinking will make it harder to fall asleep but the quality of the sleep will be better pretty much from day one, and the ability to fall asleep should get better after a few days.
