American pizza is hilariously awful. Instead of focusing on quality ingredients and good method they focus on cramping the pie with the most amount of low quality shit as humanly possible in gimmicky ways at the lowest cost and making the biggest sizes (because americans won't pay for something unless it's BIG).
This complete misunderstanding and bastardization of cuisine lead to hilarious shit like cheeseburger/mac and cheese crust and yard-long pizzas.

Not american but this is literally never a problem, either just don't eat it all (This means you get to eat your favourite parts of the pizza more) or eat some and now you got leftovers.
There are very few cases IMO where portions can be too big unless you are retarded and can't stop yourself from eating everything on your plate.

Italian in New York for a few days here.
Tried New York pizza, nothing special, there are many places in Italy that do it much better. Usually New York pizza is at the level of an Italian pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice), it is not at the level of a pizzeria and it is light years below a classic Neapolitan-style pizza.

I grew up in NY & ate a ton of pizza. A lot of the places in the suburbs were run by people from the city so as long as it was family owned there was a good chance you'd be eating authentic NY style. Eating pizza anywhere else or any place with premade dough and shit is always a huge disappointment since I grew up with such a high standard. However, I had to go to Chicago for the first time this past spring & my interest in deep dish peaked. So I looked up the classic deep dish joints in Chicago and found the big 3 was Giordanos, Lou Malnati's and Uno's.
I narrowed it down to the former 2 and of course they're both chains, so I had to find the original or oldest store for both. I showed up to Lou Malnati's and had a 2 hour wait for a personal pepperoni deep dish is it was so crowded. It came out to close to 40 bucks. However when I got it and ripped out the first slice I was already sold. It was a gigantic task to eat this thing, the cheese was goopy and incredibly tasty, the sauce is the first thing to touch your mouth and is sweet and delicious. The crust was crispy but not like in a NY style, more approaching a tortilla. Long story short, I fell in love with Chicago deep dish and crave it at least a few times a week. I had Giordano's the next day but it fell short compared to Lou Malnati's, which is by far the best pizza I've eaten and among the top foods I've eaten in my life.
