The distaste for mushrooms is common in children all across the world. Is this a survival mechanism? It would make sense for humans to not like mushrooms until they are old enough to be able to identify which ones are poisonous or not.

It depends. In Europe mushroom hunting/picking is a favorite past time for many. In the US people look at you funny if they see you picking wild mushrooms.

So I'm guessing it's mostly a cultural thing.

It's hardly common knowledge which woodland mushrooms are edible, and most would rather play it safe than misidentify a shroom.

Mushrooms just taste like dirt to me, no matter how much you wash them.

>> No.12867237

>>12867010
I know some adults that still hate them as a texture thing, they think cooked ones are like snails which is stupid.
a lot of peoples parents don't wash them properly either, if at all and the mass produced ones like button shrooms for grocery stores are always still covered in shit
but i've personally always loved mushrooms, part of a vegetable tray as a kid and you'd dunk the whole thing in dip while avoiding the tasteless cauliflower and have a very satisfying texture
I was kind of a weird kid though
I do like your theory but theres enough holes in it that it would have to be limited to regional genetic selection, I remember playing with white toadstools and things but I don't think I ever trying to put them in my mouth, even though we ate puffballs

it's really strange thinking about what we perceive as food

Maybe in some places, but I've never encountered this or heard about this personally. People hunt, fish and grow their own shit in the US, why would people be against foraging?

Is there a definitive book on mushrooms in the NE US? I can only safely recognize a couple but wanna get better.
