You'd never drink non-beverage alcohol right /ck/?

>"Someone going through a 500 ml bottle of rubbing alcohol in a 24 hour period is the equivalent of drinking 30 beers,"

>Hand sanitizer, mouthwash, and rubbing alcohol are cheap, easy to obtain, and get a person drunk very quickly—a bottle of rubby costs around $5 [$3.75 USD] and can be up to 90 percent alcohol—which makes them appealing to addicts. One EIDGE member told VICE that crews regularly hit up hospitals to steal large quantities of hand sanitizer, known on the street as "gel."

>The problem is so common in the Downtown Eastside, residents say local corner stores have jacked up the prices of products like Listerine.

I may be an alcoholic, but not JUST because of the alcohol.
I genuinely like the taste of alcoholic beverages. Basically all non-alcoholic beverages are either bland af or extremely sweet.

If you want a beverage that punches you in the face with amazing flavor, you really have to drink something with alcohol.

So no matter how much I love alcohol, I could never see myself drinking shitty tasting stuff just to get drunk.

Second I saw the words "Downtown Eastside", I knew this was about my hometown.

Isopropyl alcohol is the most common type used in products not meant to be ingested. When processed through your liver, it will literally break down into solid strands of isopropylene. This can cause scarring and damage very quickly. On the one hand, you're dying; on the other hand, the liver damage makes it easier to get drunk.
In any case, the more people who die in the DTES, the better. I've known friends and family who have been drunks and addicts. I lost my father to booze awhile back. The people who live on the streets in the DTES are on a whole other level of people who have given up on life.

I was gonna say this, even if you're getting the artificial stuff, which is usually in a cheaper chemical solvent. Ounce for ounce, you can get some gasoline-grade booze for dirt cheap. Hell, the best alcohol for dollar value will typically be malt liquor if you live in the US. It tastes like piss, but there's a reason why it has its reputation as the drink of the poor.

On the other hand, it's easier to shoplift at a cooking supply store than a liquor store, especially if you've tried it before, so he could have his reasons.

I ain't complaining about the service. Hell, if it wasn't for social assistance, I'd probably not be where I am today. Receiving a minimal income helped me get clothes, food, and a car, and eventually hold down a job. Ten years later, I'm a journeyman electrician, and I laugh when people complain about losing taxes on their wages, because I see myself as still paying back the debt I accrued to the system.

But I won't deny it. Going to the social development office was demoralizing as hell, because you'd see all these people who were chainsmoking or drinking in the parking lot, and you just knew that the clerk had absolutely no way to tell you weren't just another permanent drain on the system. You either give in, or you do your best to prove yourself.

I should add that the system in BC just gives you money, rather than relying on programs like foodstamps or such. More recently, I've heard that they've tried to stopped giving out housing allowances unless a person lets the ministry directly deposit the value to their landlord, but I was out of the system before then.

Fucking right he was. Shit's designed to be hard to consume, and it absolutely shreds your liver if you do digest it. The liver might be the fucking Hercules of all organs, but if you drank some, even if it's twenty years later, ask your doctor about running a serum liver panel. Just mention the shit about liver disease being irreparable after symptoms develop, and he ought to agree if you're 30 or 40 plus.

It's better to know and try to avoid further damage, than to die at 50 like my father did.

Cost and sources, even if any non-alcoholic hand sanitizers are well proven. The bulk of medical suppliers have decades worth of proprietary refills for their proprietary dispensers that they lock medical institutions into buying exclusively.
You can joke all you want about 'lol, there's a simple solution', but it's often the sad problem that a large-scale healthcare provider is at risk of breaking its contracts, many which make the system far more affordable, by seeking alternative products.

Having to apply for support is absolute hell for the average person, but using it to break out of the cycle is honestly uncommon. The temptation to just subsist is why so many people are able to crowd and flood the DTES and Oppenheimer Park. I struggled, even trying to even act like a normal person on social assistance, but it can help turn people into productive members of society. Honestly, if I was some yuppie uni-student and not a trade-school reprobate, I'd sure as hell apply to help reform the welfare system here in Canada. But, personal experience isn't equivalent to a graduate degree, and there's good reason for that. Instead, I just need to make sure the next generation of tradesmen don't fall down the hole.
