Been to a fancy chink restaurant for a family meeting. They advertised on the menu that they are not adding MSG per default and if you want some you have to make a special order, which we didn't. It was the most bland food I've ever been served, veggies and meat tasted like paper.

Because they actually use MSG as an ingredient in asia. It's only an amerifat thing to be upset about MSG, while they suck down their aspartame.

Chinks really got the short end of the stick with the whole msg scare. Every Chinese restaurant now has a fucking sign in the window advertising "no msg" and then these noodles which are made on the opposite side of the planet have to do the same, and people have no clue how often they actually consume msg. Ranch is my favorite example; after salt, msg is the main ingredient in the seasoning blend. I really love it when someone says they hate mayo and love ranch and then I get to tell them how ranch is made.

You can buy msg, you know.

No reason meat should taste like paper without MSG, since MSG basically gives thing a meaty flavor. And you can still use other ingredients that contain it naturally. Maybe they just sucked at cooking or were trying too hard to cater to people who wanted "healthy" food.

I know, and I have some but the problem is they made up for the lack of MSG with adding more salt. So the powder included with Top Ramen is too salty to add MSG to.

I think they went for the "healthy" approach. The veggies were steamed, not double fried. And the meat was barely roasted. I found it very disappointing, so did most of our group. My gramps liked it, but he's 90+ and most days he orders from "meals on wheels", so for him it was luxury.
