Too many varieties of subpar bread. Small amounts of low quality vegetables and gross menu items (even if there's a few dedicated customers for them), no filling menu items like Jimmy John's The Gargantuan where you finally get where you pay for.

Basically it's just overpriced shit bread with tiny ass amount of meat and cheese, and super soggy vegetables, and higher prices than you'd pay for a burger.

Depends on what you put on the sandwich and get with it. The problem with Subway is they barely put any meat/cheese on it, those little cheese triangles piss me off because they aren't even putting full slices over the sandwich. They could easily be good if they just used fresh ingredients, which is ironic since their core advertising sales pitch is how they're "fresh" and that's a pretty bare minimum thing you'd imagine any sandwich shop could handle, but Subway apparently doesn't have the money for it anymore and uses nasty spoiled / rotting ingredients stretched out as long as they're able without getting shut down by a random food inspection.
Kind of sad how all the major restaurant chains have deteriorated between the 90s and today, but Subway is an especially egregious example. I used to get Subway all the time decades ago, but now it's not even that they're disappointing so much as not even viable food anymore. I've been getting Jersey Mike's instead the past year or so and when I tried one day switching back to a Subway order for lunch it felt like eating poison. Even the bread for fuck's sake. How do you screw up bread? It was barely chewable and had some vague chemical spray taste to it. Meat was nasty and rancid. Cheese was like plastic. Sauce was blatantly watered down. Someone needs to just put it out of its misery.

Their food quality got noticeably worse probably around 10 years ago and it has only gotten gradually worse since then. Almost always happens to chain restaurants in America cus most plebs in America can't tell the difference between dog shit and a sandwich. Prime example is that Burger King is still alive. I hate specious criticisms of modernity like this. For one, design changes over time. Nothing is going to look like it did when you were a kid forever. It's unreasonable to suggest retailers and food service business never update their facilities. They use low quality ingredients without changing them out frequently enough, hoard toppings, and generally provide a terrible final product because all these practices are attempts to stay in business while not making enough money. And those practices themselves lead to them not making enough money. So they end up in a death spiral of fewer sales and decreasing quality until they finally go out of business.
