Why do people pretend alcohol is just to get you high and does not impart flavor? Just to be edgy?

The average americans taste buds are really fucked and they don't like anything flavorful that isn't also really sweet. Alcohol is bitter. If you think I'm joking I have coworkers gag when I make various tea and they see me drink it without putting sugar in it after letting it steep the proper amount of time.

Because cheap alcohol absolutely is.
Vodka with Coca-Cola is not something you sip like a decadent noble.

>> No.12703018

Bottom shelf alcohol isn't merely half as enjoyable, it isn't even worth drinking. Yet everyone talks about how wonderful it is and after a few I agree.

alcohol clearly imparts flavor and that can be proven by the fact it's used for flavoring extracts

>> No.12703076

>>12703026
>it's used for flavoring extracts
It's used to lower the evaporation temperature to improve the rate of scent dispersal. Alcohol itself has almost no flavour or scent.

Some people have that relationship with alcohol. My uncle used to prefunc family gatherings by drinking, my dad and grandpa would drink with him since they'd all get there early. My dad and grandpa recognized the uncle had a problem when he made a pitcher of 'martinis' which in and of itself is terrible but the 'martini' was basically cheap vodka with a splash of gin.

>Martini
>Vodka with a splash of gin

I know there's a martini identity crisis, but there's a line between calling anything in a martini glass a martini and calling anything with vodka and/or gin a martini.

Would totally have a pitcher of martinis with folk though.
I once a martini with of bombay sapphire and decade-expired Noilly Pratt and had some cheetos with it, and that bitch really put the "guilty" in "guilty pleasure"

Well thats not really true, its largely used because a lot of flavorful compounds do not dissolve in water but do dissolve in ethanol, plus it can sit at room temperature for long periods of time without having to worry about microbiological contamination unlike water based solutions

but ethanol definitely has a sweet scent and flavor, its just easily overpowered by most flavor compounds which only take very small concentrations for us to notice unlike ethanol

Flavor does matter, but you have to make a cocktail that won't give you a hangover.

Cheap spiced rum and Rootbeer tastes great and will get you trashed on the cheap. But you're gonna get hurt in the morning.
If you mix an old fashioned with some decent bourbon and you'll feel okay the next day.

trick is you want more vitamin C than sugar in your drank.

Quality alcohol has lower methanol contamination, which results in a gentler hangover if you get one at all. The sugar in rootbeer also makes such a mix a harder drink to recover from. There's more to a hangover than you seem to think.

Alcohol doesnt even register as a drink to me. It tastes awful.

The high becomes part of the flavor. This is why vodka is usually 40% while wine is 13%, for example. How fast you get drunk and what kind of drunk you get from the drink is part of the drinking experience.

>> No.12705939

Yeah Im not sure why its more popular to be fucked up than to drink something that taste good. Its like if high caffeine coffe was more popular no matter how bitter it is, its like ok your all wired on coffee , why not just take a caffeine pill?

I didnt grow up with high school drinking or college drinking, I get maybe less than 10 drinks a year max, and everytime I do drink I enjoy it usually because I spend a little more $$$/ Try something new. However I never go, man I cant wait for my next drink. I would say 50% of most drinks I get bored of the taste when i'm almost done with it.

Dunno man

flavor (taste + aroma) compounds bind better to alcohol than lipids or water
many cheap extracts are made with glycerin - a sugar alcohol derived from fats - rather than ethanol. the point is not to have flavor from the alcohol but rather for the alcohol to usurp the flavor of the infused ingredient.
