It’s pretty based as a dip for crackers or pita, it’s even more based as a condiment for grilled meats. There are plenty of pre-made hummus brands out there that are pretty decent but it’s also dead simple and cheap to make it yourself. You can get all the ingredients at your average grocery store and all you need as far as kitchen equipment goes is a blender or food processor. You could technically mash the chick peas by hand with a fork or potato masher but its a lot of work to get a smooth consistency that way. Here’s the basic recipe I use based on my own experimentation and a couple hummus recipes from different Middle Eastern cuisines.

>1 can of chick peas/garbanzo beans
>1 clove of garlic
>1 lemon, preferably Meyers
>1 teaspoon sea salt
>1 teaspoon black pepper
>2 teaspoons of cumin powder
>1/4 cup of tahini
>1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

Drain the can of chick peas, reserving about half of it in a cup for later use. Cut the lemon in half, remove as many seeds as you can, and juice it. Peel and crush the garlic clove. Throw the chick peas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil in the food processor/blender. Blend until smooth. If the hummus is too thick, add some of the chick pea water you saved from earlier. Now add in the salt, pepper, and cumin powder and blend until well combined. Taste it and see if you think it needs more seasoning, and add it to taste. Pour the hummus into a bowl and refrigerate for at least an hour.

A note on tahini: it’s basically Arab peanut butter, only it’s made from toasted sesame seeds and it’s not sweetened at all. It’s very oily and has a pungent flavor. You should be able to find it at your grocery store in the International section. It’s expensive but a little goes a long way and it keeps fresh for a long time.
