>Medical myths
>The advice to drink at least eight glasses of water a day can be found throughout the popular press. One origin may be a 1945 recommendation that stated: A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 liters daily in most instances. An ordinary standard for diverse persons is 1 milliliter for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods. If the last, crucial sentence is ignored, the statement could be interpreted as instruction to drink eight glasses of water a day.
https://www.renalandurologynews.com/news/too-much-water-could-be-harmful/article/118792/
>Drinking two liters of water per day may not benefit most individuals and even could be harmful, investigators say.
>At the Canadian Society of Nephrology annual meeting here, re-searchers from the University of Western Ontario, also in London, presented a study showing a significant correlation between excess urine production—which is usually caused by excess fluid intake—and proteinuria.
>The large population-based study uncovered a five-fold higher risk of proteinuria among people with polyuria than among those with normal urine volume, even after taking into account such factors as age, sex, and estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Danone's been caught unironically trying to shill in academic journals by passing off baseless ads as actual content:
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2011/jul/22/had-our-fill-of-water
>Over the last few weeks, those who visited the British Medical Journal's website might have noticed an advert for a new public health initiative, Hydration for Health. It is sponsored by Danone – which owns the Evian, Volvic and Badoit bottled water brands – and urges healthcare professionals to encourage people to drink more water, claiming that "evidence is increasing that even mild dehydration plays a role in the development of various diseases".
>Margaret McCartney, a GP and columnist, saw these adverts and complained about it, writing an article for the BMJ (who admitted "we hadn't followed our own guidelines. The advertisement bypassed our editorial checks") about the lack of evidence – and citing the shortcomings of many studies – that people should be drinking more water.
Also, reminder that juices, soda, and even coffee are all as hydrating as plain water:
https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/103/3/717/4564598
>Cumulative urine output at 4 h after ingestion of cola, diet cola, hot tea, iced tea, coffee, lager, orange juice, sparkling water, and a sports drink were not different from the response to water ingestion.
And as one more reminder, your body is way more sensitive to a lack of water than to a lack of food (you might die after months with no food; you will die in a couple days with no water), and thirst kicks in long before you're even close to actual dehydration:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6514825
>The results indicate that during free access to water humans become thirsty and drink before body fluid deficits develop, perhaps in response to subtle oropharyngeal cues, and so provide evidence for anticipatory thirst and drinking in man.

Sugar is actually an important part of rehydration drinks along with salts like sodium and potassium chloride. Just look up the history of cholera where most victims used to shit themselves out diarrhea water and die of dehydration. Intravenous was a less effective method of rehydration than plain water, electrolytes, and sugar.

That being said, sports drinks aren't that good. Better off with a pedialyte packet. Or even better, sugar, mortons litte salt, and magnesium citrate.

Stop being so fucking gullible and just drink when you're thirsty. I'd bet money at least one of you is going to end up in the hospital over this stupid shit. You're not even supposed to drink 2 liters (AKA "8 glasses") per day, that's a myth based on someone's mistaken reading a 1950s article on hydration needs where they failed to notice this line:
>Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.
All you need for 2 liters of hydration is 1 milliliter of water per each dietary calorie consumed. Unless you're living off beef jerky and dehydrated vegetables you don't need anywhere close to 2 liters in *additional* water intake, let alone any water quantity measured in gallons.

How is something so simple this much of a mindfuck for everyone here?
Your body freaks out and makes you feel like you're absolutely parched and need to drink immediately LONG before you even get close to dehydration you fucking mongoloids.
If you're not worried about "accidentally" becoming "chronically calorie-deficient," then you have roughly 30 times as little reason to be worried about "accidentally" becoming "chronically dehydrated." Because you'll probably die in about 3 months at the absolute earliest from no food, but with water it's more like 3 days. Something that can kill you after just 3 days of deprivation isn't going to be easy to miss. Try not drinking or eating anything for a day or two if you're skeptical and experience firsthand how many alarms your body will raise.

My kidneys are absolutely massive and bloated with cysts and scars (genetic thing), but my eGFR is usually always >100.
Nephrologist told me to just drink as much water as I feel comfortable with, and that needing to set goals for water consumption is only really necessary when you know you're mostly drinking other fluids instead. The '2 litres a day' is just a guideline to keep people from getting either too dehydrated or having an electrolyte imbalance.

As a reference, I occasionally have to do a 24 hour piss collection for tests. The jug they provide is just over 4 litres. I've never actually filled it completely, but it comes with instructions on what to do if that happens.

Three liters might be fine in the Summer heat, especially if you're doing physical work. Stretched over a whole day it's definitely not at very high risk of causing any damage to the kidneys, or causing "water poisoning" for that matter.
Overhydration CAN cause kidney damage, first indication being presence of protein in the urine, which is very easy to test for. And it CAN cause electrolyte imbalances which can in the worst cases be fatal. But 3 liters a day isn't going to do it.
Individual need for fluid varies a lot depending on environment, activity, the size of the person etc. etc. but generally you can assume that if you are not elderly, sick, or performing extreme tasks like running a marathon or participating in the Tour de France etc. you can simply get by on drinking when you feel thirsty. Keep a waterbottle handy, but don't force yourself to drink if you don't feel like it. Again, this is assuming you are not very old, have a disease that might affect hydration or sensitivity to hydration, or are performing very demanding physical work.

>At the Canadian Society of Nephrology annual meeting here, re-searchers from the University of Western Ontario, also in London, presented a study showing a significant correlation between excess urine production—which is usually caused by excess fluid intake—and proteinuria.
>The large population-based study uncovered a five-fold higher risk of proteinuria among people with polyuria than among those with normal urine volume, even after taking into account such factors as age, sex, and estimated glomerular filtration rate.

>why we have an obesity epidemic
A lot more because of food than drinks.
I have never once met a fat person who ate reasonable amounts of food and got all their caloric surplus from liquids.
Fatty's problem is the extra 1,000 calories they shouldn't be eating, not the extra 100-200 calories they get from a non-water drink.
Average amount of soda consumed by an American daily (and this average doesn't include the people who don't drink any soda) is 2.6 glasses, AKA 0.65 liters or a little over 20 oz (the size of those vending machine soda bottles).
https://news.gallup.com/poll/156116/nearly-half-americans-drink-soda-daily.aspx
>inb4 this is an average and not the extremes
The average American today IS overweight, so it's actually a good number for how much soda is consumed by the majority of overweight people.

Too much of anything will kill you, but you're not doing yourself a favour by keeping your stomach full all day no matter what you're using as filler. You'll want to ween yourself off the big portions and the snacking and let your body get used to feeling full on less, not artificially maintaining a large stomach.
It takes time and dedication of course. Try some raw cucumber and carrot or something instead of just water. They will at least keep you feeling full for longer, but in the end you need a proper lifestyle change.

>>12678632
Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not a woman.
And I really don't think the other anon should be taking healthcues from alcoholics. They do indeed sometimes live to a fairly old age, but the lives they lead are miserable and the fact that the liver gives out before the kidneys doesn't mean they're doing the kidneys any favours by downing a crate or two of beer every day. (And plenty of them really do)
You can have unpleasant side effects from something without it killing you anyway. Daily overhydration may simply lead to pains and infections in the kidneys and urinary tract without causing you do die. That still sucks, though.

Sorry, forgot to include this:
Generally speaking you'd be better off looking at how much you're pissing rather than how much you're drinking.
Today is a very hot day where I live. I could easily drink 3 liters of water through the day and only produce ½-1 liter of urine. That'd be alright, but a little on the iffy side. I'd consider a urinary output of 1 liter a minimum and I'd want more than that for my patients, unless they're specifically on a fluid restriction of course.
There are charts of urine colour you can also look up. They're only meant as guides but generally you don't want to be taking one very dark yellow piss on a hot Summer day like this. And you don't want to pee something that looks like water every 45 minutes either.
Here's a decent chart that some genius, possibly one of those US nurses, chose to print in monochrome.

Diabetes is literally named after excessive urination so if you're drinking a lot but not pissing a lot you're probably good.
If you really do suspect you might have diabetes it's a very easy thing to test for either in blood or urine. If you live in one of those places where even getting your doctor on the phones costs a fortune you might ask around for a diabetic who has a blood glucose device and slip him 5 bucks to get your BG measured.

If you're constantly feeling thirsty but pissing almost as much as you think that could, possibly, be an indicator of diabetes.
If you're feeling thirsty and drinking 4 liters because the weather's hot that's fine of course, but if all 4 liters are running right out of you again it might be a problem.
You really would need to have your blood or urine tested for glucose to be sure, though.

There are several types of diabetes.
The ones you're most likely to have heard of are diabetes mellitus (the sugar related ones) type 1 and 2. Type 2 is indeed for fat people.
Apart from those there are other afflictions that are called diabetes due to the aforementioned naming after excessive urination.
Diabetes insipitus for example has nothing to do with sugar. I think we have four or six sub-types of that one.

Yes, especially if you're a regular drinker of it.
Caffeine is, as many uneducated people will eagerly tell you, a diuretic, but the amount of water you're taking in along with that caffeine more than makes up for it, and if you're having coffee regularly you will also develop a resistance to this diuretic effect.
I am hoping that your "morning pint" is water. I know what folks are like on this board, though, so I won't judge.
