Just get a variety pack of some more widely produced stuff and then figure out what you're drinking. If you drop big dough on beers with dudes you don't know you'll look weird. Just don't get a ridiculous macrobrew and you'll be good. Real people like most beers, and you'll be cool for just having tried and shared something new.
