Im only sad if they’re sad. Me and a few friends went on to college and got more prestigious positions in our fields but another bud has been waiting tables at a few bars for the past 20 years. He loves it. More than I love my field that’s for sure. Honestly couldn’t be more happy for him that it’s his dream job. Sad to see some people stuck there and hate it tho. ICU nursing now, which means I only have one patient and I sit right next to him or her for the entire shift administering and adjusting medication etc. based on constant readouts from the instruments.
You know those old cars that require the driver to know them really well because he needs to apply a little choke here and downshift for a couple seconds to allow the engine to rev back up there and you have to warm it up before you turn on the foglights or the battery dies etc etc?
That's basically what I do, but with a human body. Constant micromanagement.
And then after a while either gets better or dies and I have to talk to the family about it.

Hep and HIV are pretty rare here although I do see patients with them fairly regularly. Used to get some tuberculosis cases when I worked pulmonary medicine.
We take lots of precautions. We test new arrivals for these disease of course but as a rule treat any patient as an infection risk. I'm quite proud to say that my ICU has not had a staff member become infected by anything worse than the flu or norovirus in over a decade.

Depending on the patient status I do sometimes have most of the shift free to read or browse 4chan(nel) actually. The ICU isn't nearly as hectic as you might imagine, most of the time.
The entire hospital IP range is banned, so I can't post from work, though.

Tipping is the biggest scam America has created, at first it was a nice gesture but then the obvious American greed kicked in when managers started noticing the tips, so they took that as an excuse to lower the wage now because of that it turned the industry upsidedown, so instead of just doing your job and getting paid an adequate amount they see it as an excuse to not pay their employers a proper wage.

Yup, its all about perspective. It isn't lame or shameful to enjoy a job with lots of human interaction where you get to give people good food and for a short part of their life make them have a fantastic experience because you gave them wonderful service. There's a lot of pride in that. A lot of pride in an honest days work. My grandpa owned his own restaurant but he still worked the bar because that was his favorite job, interacting with customers, making them their favorite drink, and being a valuable member of the community in his own small little way.

His funeral was stuffed packed with all the acquaintances and friends he made along the way with his warm personality and easy conversational abilities. Old regulars got up and told sweet stories about him when he still ran the bar, people I had never even met because he was already retired by the time I came along. And he was never even a real church goer or anything 100% of the turn out was just based on the genuine feeling people had for my grandfather. It makes me sad when I see people today knock humble work with the insidious sneering implication that it can't be worthwhile or fulfilling to work in a humble service sector type work. Turns out that even though my grandpa rarely went to church or never graduated from high school that he learned the true value of humble service and the fruits of honest labor better than most churchgoers or college graduates I've ever met.
