Read the article, apparently they are forcing everyone to use induction stoves. I recently moved apartments switching from a gas stove to an induction one, and they're such a gimmick. Can't even use half of my stone pots, can't even adjust temperature properly, when I "lower" the temperature on an induction stove, all it's really doing is providing the electricity that heats the pot in bursts instead of continuously, the lower the temperature the more time between bursts, so whenever I'm say boiling something on a "low" temperature, it'll just bubble up for a second, settle down for several seconds, and bubble up again when it's receiving electricity. I feel really sorry for Berkeley if the whole city is going to be forced to use stuff like this.

A flame heats both the bottom and sides of the pan and can be observed and adjusted instantly. While you can argue about theoretical heat distribution all you want, coils get fucked to hell very rapidly with any usage causing random near dead spots and hot spots all over the burner whereas gas is controllable. Coils also take a while to cool down and heat up, not a problem with flames; also there's no fucking fire with flames to do other things like roast a vegetable skin with.

Transmission losses are minimal, and compensated for by local transformers.

The efficiency of resistance heaters depends more on the design of the stovetop and your cookware. Most stovetops (as well as things like baseboard heaters and laundry machines) across North American run off of 240 volts instead of 120 volts to reduce line current, and thus line losses.

Frankly, switching to completely electric homes is mostly just a matter of simplifying infrastructure. Rather than having to have an entire separate utility, with its own infrastructure, it's easier just to have a more rugged electrical grid. Damage to a gas main can lead to a massive loss of resources, where as damage to an electrical line actually takes load off the source. There are other convenience benefits to completely electric homes, mostly because the source of electrical power can be changed from older forms of power to more environmentally friendly ones, with absolutely no need to change things on the consumer's side.

Not that this matters where I live, because natural gas is a luxury, and most of our power is hydroelectric.

>> No.12651114

Gas cooking loses a lot of efficiency from much of the heat not transferring into the pan before the hot plume speeds past it. A single flat face isn't a very optimal thermal interface.

natural gas lines are a massive hazard in an earthquake especially in a low density residential context when you will have tons of pipes coming off of the main, and if any one of these fails you can have an explosive situation. So there is a theoretical reason for banning residential natural gas in tectonically active areas. They're probably doing it for GHG emissions though which is patently retarded.

As an electrician and certified solar installer and hobby chef that lives in California, this pisses me the fuck off. Every fucking time you rent a home in CA it's electric or induction. It is not as energy efficient as gas in the long run. It is not as good at cooking. You cannot control the heat as well as you can with gas. California has so many untapped gas deposits it's insane. Even if we don't want to do it, we can still import it from other states for bargain basement prices. The CA government fucks up time and time again, but this is just stupid. CH4 is good. Solar is a marketing ploy.

If you really want to be good to the environment, eat organic. Solar and wind don't mean shit. Just don't use coal and oil. Use natural gas. It's just that we need to force companies to cap their wells properly when they finish fracking. That's the only thing. Anyone who is worth a damn knows that Viking Stoves are GOAT. You cant go higher with portable tops in the US because you only have 110V in your houses. More power would need more Amperes which would toast the wiring in any normal house. In Germany we can plug 3500W induction tops and water kettles into any standard outlet. I have two 2000W portable induction tops, I have never had an issue with them. There is a widespread quality control problem out there on induction ranges sold in the U.S. It could be just that only GE and Frigidaire sells mainstream induction ranges under $2,000 in the U.S., and both companies are just shit at making induction stoves, and if you're rich enough to install Gaggenau induction cooktops, everything works perfectly and never breaks.

The petrodollar is a system that forces all purchases of oil to be made in US dollars
this then mandates a perpetual demand for US dollars, giving it it's titanic value
this is the reason why the US is able to stand with over 20 trillion in debt, but not ease up an inch on their welfare programs for nigs

This system requires an extremely powerful military, however, since if the US was weak, some other power could just muscle in and declare that they should be the ruler of this petrodollar system, and gain the same prosperity the US did

The US losing petrodollar status would result in the dollar dropping to rock bottom in value in a matter of fucking hours, and annihilate the US economy in a manner worse than has ever been seen
amusingly, due to globalism and globalization, the US economy collapsing, or any major nation's economy, would immediately cause a domino effect on all the other world economies, and give the world Great Depression 2: electric boogaloo

Petrodollar status is not a binary thing where when it finally flips over one day, and everything suddenly changes. U.S. Dollar has been steadily losing "petrodollar" status since the early 2000s with the emergence of Euro and later with resurgent China. More and more oil producers are willing to accept payments in Euro or Yuan, especially Iran which now sells most of their oil to China.

I can't tell if you're just shitposting or not because I've worked with kids who honest to God didn't know what a coax cable is, so I'll explain anyway.

Cable TV is a subscription service, identical to satellite TV except instead of fetching a signal with a home dish, it recieves one at a central hub and the signal is then sent to homes in an area via physical cables, either buried or along power lines. In the home, you connect the cable line to either a reciever box, or directly to your TV. Then based on your subscription (think cell phones, Netflix, et al) you get a certain amount of channels, anywhere from ~20 to ~1000+. With that you can watch different channels, which show pre-determined programming interspersed with commercials. There are some specialty channels, bus most are general interest.

A good alternative is using an antenna, which captures over the air (OTA) signal to show channels broadcast locally. If you have a newer TV, you can hook up the antenna directly to your TV, and it will decode the signal for you, without need for a separate box. Most channels are broadcast in full digital HD now, but there are a few in more rural areas still in analog (think fuzzy picture, old CRT TV).

Hope that helps clear things up, man.

He's talking about transmission loss, not resources required to install a gas system. Transmission loss refers to how voltage can drop when sent over very long distances through wire. Plus it has to be 'treated' through many stages by the time it ends up flowing out of your outlet at a smooth consistent 120v/10A 50Hz A/C.
Natural gas doesn't lose potency over distance and it doesn't have to be managed to such an intense standard as electricity. Towns and cities have to maintain teams of overseers and monitoring personnel 24 hours a day to watch the current load in all areas of the city and make constant flow adjustments at peak and off peak times to ensure that the current and voltage remain in spec.
If the flow of natural gas coming out of your stove is a few percent more or less than the night before you won't notice. If your electricity increases by 10 or 15 volts then many of your sensitive electronics will go into a failsafe mode or their power supplies will be destroyed.

Cooking isn't really relevant emission wise, but your bullshit is still bullshit.

Induction puts around 10x more heat into a pan than a gas burner per kWh, you can easily swallow the generation and transmission losses.

Gas hobs are room heaters more than pan heaters.

electrifying the cooking systems will reduce the footprint, but not entirely eliminate it, you’re ofc correct. unless the grid is powered by renewables, which berkely plans to do

>>12650955
natural gas from houses makes up 27% of Berkely’s emissions, equivalent to 20 million gallons of gas per year.

berkely also plans on having their grid be powered by 100% renewables by 2035, so electrifying as much as possible beforehand seems smart.

like what >>12651007 and everybody else is saying though, electric stoves can and should be better. right meow they function like microwaves and just go from 0 to 100 over and over at a pace that averages out to your setting.

somebody design a better electric range and take all my money.
