Because the act of smoking is extremely pleasurable, and nicotine is one of the only chemicals that has a direct action on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors which boosts memory and general cognition. The buzz also feels nice if you don't overdo it, as a nonsmoker a half cigarette's worth of nicotine buzz should be quite pleasant - but preferably if you are sitting down. Nicotine isn't really pleasurable if you're moving.

Smoking also gives you a reason to talk with other smokers, sort of breaks the ice, and smokers are typically more interesting than your average nonsmoker - though there are many exceptions.

After you've developed a habit, sometimes before, smokes can start to taste good and you can get into things like cloves, unfiltered Camels, and Dunhills which are all delicious. It can almost be considered a hobby at that point.
