Its not that they're good, though they are above average, its that they are priced extremely well. You can get a double burger, fries, and a shake for less than the price of just the burger at some places. And unlike other cheapo burger joints (Dicks) it isn't so cheap that it's not very good, they're still tasty.

In n Out is bar none, the worst fast food I have ever had. Who in there right mind would cook a burger with mustard on the griddle. I've eaten many fast food burgers and I could not finish In n Out because of the mustard. The overwhelming stench and taste of it made it impossible to finish.
In no particular order these are the fast food places I have eaten at so I consider myself quite experienced in the fast food world.
A&W, Arby's, Burger King, Checkers, Dairy Queen, Krystal, Hardee's, Jack in the Box, McDonalds, Tim Hortons, Wendys, Cook Out, Cheeburger Cheeburger, Culvers, Del Taco, Fatburger, Five Guys, Freddys, Steak n Shake, Red Burrito, Huddle House, Shakeshack, BurgerFi, Burger21, Sonic, Taco Johns, and Whataburger.

Considering the price and that it is a fast food style place competing with places like mcdonalds, burger king etc then yes, its one of the best among them.

However you can get much better burgers from dedicated non-chain burger places. But of course sometimes people crave the fast food style burgers, and then in n out is one of the best choices.
