there was a sushi place run by some fresh off the boats that was all you can eat but you had to order a specific number and for ever piece you didn't eat they'd charge you like $4 so you learned real quick to order exactly how much you actually wanted. best sushi i've ever had though, super worth the gamble.

once showed up at their place a 9pm not realizing they closed at 8pm but we had a party of 8 so they opened up shop for us and they straight up only spoke two words of English "yes" and "no' but they could make a fucken decent roll. We were drunk and rowdy AF, i think we left a $50 tip just for opening up after hours and putting up with us

>When you can't afford 10 dollars a roll at a good sushi joint, what supermarket do you go to?
Supermarkets are regional. Seafood freshness is regional, as well. The more powerful a buyer your brand is, the better choices in wholesale seafood, where you either pass on the cost, or your giantness reduces your cost from sheer size of your orders. Therefore, taking a national survey probably does little good. Supermarket sushi is going to have soggy kelp unless they are making it to order.

For people who are continental, real travelers who experience a lot of regions of supermarkets and have some disposable income, ie not Real TravelersTM, there's some value in a survey based upon comparisons.
In Miami, where I'm originally from, local popular sushi group SushiMaki http://sushimaki.com/ stocks an actual sushi bar counter at Whole Foods and makes it fresh all day to order, as well as provides some lunch crowd to the small set of usual WF dining area. This restaurant also stocks the sports stadiums, airports, university canteens and other catering venues around town. Outside of that the highest rated grocery in the Southeastern states, Publix, does a similar sushi counter prep in each store and experiences a happy following.

In the mid-Atlantic, I'd say Wegmans leads the way for quality in sushi takeout and most other takeout for busy exec types or health food convenience people, maybe Harris Teeter is the close 2nd. Trader Joes, ehh, maybe a Fresh Market. Almost all of the time, you're better off getting takeout from the best 2 or 3 restaurants in town instead, the places with the good smoked eel and variety of roe Contrary to your ideology, sushi is a higher priced convenience food in a grocery, and like salad bars by the pound, it isn't usually a cost savings. It's got a food safety timer on it, so the waste of throwing out perishable food that didn't sell is high enough not to give the food away at a normal cost.

In case people don't know, all of the Safeway Sushi stands are actually leased spaces that companies like AFC franchises out to small entrepreneurs.

My wife did this before, and it only cost her about $15k for a safeway sushi franchise. AFC provides all the ingredients for a fixed fee and all she has to do is roll sushi and kick back a small percentage of profits.

I don't want to say how profitable these franchises are, but I can say she started with 1 stand 10 years ago and now she has 4 and makes a very comfortable living. She doesn't even roll sushi herself anymore and just hires cheap labor.

IMO, much better than $500k/store for a failing subway franchise.

They were serious about the sharing thing, you got one warning then they said they would charge you for another plate. We never pushed are luck past the warning because the lady was like a bipolar ninja, super polite but would snap into combat mode and yell from across the restaurant and wave a pack of chopsticks in a very threading manner. We were drunkin teenagers and she was not taking any shit

i've never seen the frying thing anywhere else, it might have just been something the guy came up with, im also not sure how they pulled it off because it made it crispy almost like breading crispy but it was just rice and it was a light fry i didn't get greasy at all. i tried looking it up but i can only find people battering and deep frying and that not the same thing.
