Pepperoni by itself. Other than that it depends entirely on the toppings going with it.

Pepperoni is saltier by a large margin, so unless you love super salt, it's better with some sweet toppings like red onions or pineapple. Italian Sausage is better with heavy salt like green olives or bacon.

How is that a stretched definition?
Pepperoni is a type of sausage.
It's like saying pugs are only dogs by a stretched definition. Nibba they are dogs, it doesn't matter if you can classify it in a subcategory, first and foremost it belongs to the category "dog".
For the "sausage" on the left however, there's even a case to be made that it isn't really sausage, since it could just as well be seasoned ground meat.
Basically we have to ask ourselves, is the term sausage defined by the shape or the filling? I would say the shape is the defining factor, as sausage fillings do vary a lot.
