So I found out there are two types of people - those who think eating pistachios by opening the shell is some sort of pistachio eating ritual, and those who think pistachios should come in packages already cleaned.

What do you think? Also pistachio best nut general?

I fall into the former camp though not so autistic as to think of it as a ritual. It is annoying when the shell doesn't open easily though but not so much I would want all my nuts de-shelled in the packaging.

Pistachio ice cream is great though.

I suck the shelled nut before pulling it out of my mouth and unshelling it to eat the inner

I buy salted ones, and the shells themselves are salted

pistachio tastes like any other nut. what the hell is so special about this? almonds is the best because they feel more premium and have deep flavor.

A friend of mine at uni was dating a greek exchange student and when she went back to visit I asked her to bring me some ouzo and pistachios. Holy shit, they were an epiphany compared to these flavorless CA shit pistachios we get here in the states. Why do we put up with such a dismal food production scene here?

Not that removing shells is particularly fun but shelled pistachios usually feel kinda soft and stale when eating.

if you think Californian pistachios are bad, never ever try Turkish pistachios

Eating them without the shells feels too easy. We need to WORK to enjoy our nuts.

I prefer unshelled pistachios.

Not those shitty California pistachios -- those swollen, mealy, tasteless things -- no, I prefer the Turkish antep variety because Iranian nuts are hard to come by. They are generally smaller and way more flavorful than any of the pistachios you may have tried. You eventually build up a callus on your thumb and index finger and it's nothing to shell even the most stubborn ones.

The best pistachios are salted and roasted, and when the water leaves during heating, a slight, crispy salt shell envelopes the nut, making them delicious. If I'm honest with myself, pistachios are just a salt delivery system, seeing as I will occasionally place a shelled nut on my tongue and then touch it to a pile of flaky sea salt.

Do yourself a favor and order Turkish or Iranian antep pistachios.

I don’t give a shit if they’re shelled or unshelled. They’re expensive as fuck. I almost bought an already de-shelled bag today and it was 5 bucks and there weren’t even that many in the bag. Fuck that. I’ve always preferred peanuts and cashews anyways
