This is a wine thread. Post things about wine.

What are you drinking? What are you looking for, or holding on to for an occasion? What are your recent or all-time favorites? What are your wine-related questions?

Why does red wine give me heartburn when literally nothing else does except for orange juice? Like just one glass and my stomach begs for mercy. I eat everything and spicy shit and acidic stuff like tomato sauce and nothing but more than a sip of those two things and it's on. White wine I can down all night and I'm fine except for a worse hangover in the morning than if I drink other booze but I know that's because of the sugar.

Or maybe it's ok as long as you don't express appreciation for French wine. Hard to tell, really.

>drinking
Chateau Maris 'Las Combes' Cru La Liviniere 2010. A 9 year old, old-vines 100% Grenache from the Minervois. Also only 20 bucks.

>holding on to
I've got a bottle of 1965 Chateau Chalon vin jaune, a bottle of 20 year old Cote-Rotie from the cote brune, and a 15 year old bottle of Zind Humbrecht grand cru Riesling right now, among a few others.

>recent favorite
Escondite del Ardacho 'Las Guillermas' Rioja. Super interesting wine.

>all-time
Definitely a bottle of 1978 JL Chave Hermitage I got to try once.

There was probably an HBO where the character drank wine and now all the flyovers want to be just like that character now after decades of flying into a blind xenophobic/homophobic rage at the mere idea of consuming wine outside of a steak house.

i feel so dumb for asking this. but, is expensive wine really that different from cheap wine? like i currently have 12 dollar bottles of red merlot. it's alright. if i had spent 60-70 dollars would they taste outrageously better?

>> No.12481252

>>12481213
not all good wines are expensive, not all expensive wines are good. Find a style/expression/region/varietal you like, try a handful of bottles, and work your way up the price ladder. More expensive wines are typically meant to age, but there are exceptions to everything

Mass produced swill will just slap the word "organic" or "bio" on the bottle somewhere because the customer doesn't actually care or understand the relevance of the technical information

I have family friends that make all kinds of wine including blueberry wine and habanero wine. Most of their stuff is way too sweet for my taste, but I enjoy trying what they've made when I visit them. I used to enjoy a sparkling pomegranate wine from the dollar store and seriously regret not buying several cases of it. A lot of the wine I see at the dollar store ends up at regular liquor stores after a while (6-12 months), but I cannot find the pomegranate one.

Some $4 or less wines I've had were pretty good while some were horrible. $12 should get you a decent wine. B-12.com sells all kinds of incredible wines for ~$15-$30 and no shipping on large enough orders. Laithwaite sends you really good wines that end up being like $8 per bottle after shipping for a variety case. You don't need to spend all the way up to $70 for great wine, though it would probably be quite good as long as it's from an established, reputable winery.

Less expensive wines are usually much younger, so reds will usually benefit greatly from being decanted for an hour before drinking. I bought a pack of liquor bottle pourers for olive oil and some decanted whiskey, and they've turned out to be helpful wine pourers for when I didn't plan out decanting a bottle in advance. It can vastly improve the taste of inexpensive wines.

Not at all. High quality Riesling can age for a few decades, Cote-Rotie (and other Northern Rhone syrahs) are generally not at their best until 10 years at least and can age for 50+, and Vin Jaune can continue to improve for a hundred years.

Many wines are meant to be drunk young, or drink best after only short aging, but many wines can improve and develop for a very long time.
