You'd be very surprised at the quantity of vegetables you can get out of a typical suburban yard. If you preserve surplus (canning, freezing and drying) you can get the majority of a small families needs. The issue with that small of an area is keeping it organic since you need to plant some areas in green manure crops to replenish the soil nutrients. A large field and you could grow everything except for grains.
