If you're staying in SF proper, most tourists go to El Farolito or La Taqueria in the Mission for cheap Mexican food. If you want Chinese, go to any dim sum place in the city, or to a bakery and get a char siu bao. There's also a bunch of haute cuisine joints like Gary Danko in the city, several of them Michelin starred, if you're into that.

Someone already suggested the French Laundry, but that place is in wine country, which is about an hour and change outside of the city, and it's hard to get reservations. The original "California cuisine" place is Chez Panisse, in Berkeley, but again, it's hard to get reservations (unless you go to the upstairs section, which is more of a walk-in sort of affair.).

There's way too many fucking places to get some more "normal" cuisine like barbecue or a burger, so you gotta be more specific about where you're staying if you want some recommendations.

Also, the memes about feces and needles being everywhere are actually true. The SF board of supervisors spends literally tens of millions of dollars in public works cleaning projects annually in lieu of directly addressing the homeless situation. We need a Giuliani figure, but no politician has the stones to do it.

this is the best advice, just get a california burrito or a breakfast burrito, or carne asada fries if you're feeling saucy, and cover everything in green sauce. This is the real CA/southwest experience
