I think it's bullshit that they are denying them the last meal in some places now because some guy ordered a lot and didn't eat it.
First of all, it's entirely possible that he genuinely lost his appetite when he sat down to eat it and realised what "last meal" really means.
Second, even a huge pile of food is like a hundred dollars. Absolutely nothing compared to all the other taxpayer expenses involved.

Thirdly, if they really are hurting that much from having to buy a condemned man a steak and a piece of pie they could ask the family to pay for it or, if he has any, use his own money. I've got some dosh in the bank. I'd expect to get a decent last meal for some of it if I got myself on death row.

Even if it is he was still wasting very little money on that compared to what he was costing the taxpayer on a daily basis.
I know the last meal isn't actually served just before they are killed, but it might still be the thing that makes a guy finally realise what's coming.

Yeah, if you read about the incident it's pretty clear the guy was being a dick about it.

Yeah and it's an expense they don't have to spend. Plus, most prisons still allow them to make a final meal request, it just can't exceed a certain amount of money. Other places just leave the warden in charge of that decision, and others let the prisoner make any request the kitchen can actually make.
