>The advice to drink at least eight glasses of water a day can be found throughout the popular press. One origin may be a 1945 recommendation that stated: A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 litres daily in most instances. An ordinary standard for diverse persons is 1 millilitre for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods. If the last, crucial sentence is ignored, the statement could be interpreted as instruction to drink eight glasses of water a day.

You're not dehydrated to begin with. The idea everyone's "chronically dehydrated" is literal bottled water company propaganda.
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2011/jul/22/had-our-fill-of-water
>Over the last few weeks, those who visited the British Medical Journal's website might have noticed an advert for a new public health initiative, Hydration for Health. It is sponsored by Danone – which owns the Evian, Volvic and Badoit bottled water brands – and urges healthcare professionals to encourage people to drink more water, claiming that "evidence is increasing that even mild dehydration plays a role in the development of various diseases".
>Margaret McCartney, a GP and columnist, saw these adverts and complained about it, writing an article for the BMJ (who admitted "we hadn't followed our own guidelines. The advertisement bypassed our editorial checks") about the lack of evidence – and citing the shortcomings of many studies – that people should be drinking more water.

That's almost always the problem in cases of extreme water intake where someone ends up in a hospital. There's nothing remotely helpful or interesting about the concept that health advice may not be helpful to all people. Medical journalism in the last 10 years has been a flurry of "That thing you were told in the 80's? Well too much of it is bad and it doesnt help everyone" and all it does is muddy the waters by making it appear that no medical advice is helpful. Regardless of how genetically similar are we all biologically differ even at infintessimally small levels. But those levels are just enough to prevent conventional medical wisdom from being beneficial to everyone or even almost everyone. So yes, its worthless to say that drinking 2 liters may not have a benefit and could actually be harmful, because literally everything may not have a benefit and could actually be harmful. Also I was specifically taking about that article which talks about drinking 2 liters and then immediately talking about the effects of excessive water consumption without establishing that 2 liters is infact excessive.

No. If anything it's even MORE ridiculous to believe you're accidentally getting "mildly dehydrated" all the time. It's insane how long some people have been recorded surviving without food*, whereas with water if you're kept from getting any of it (including the large amount of water in food that everyone ignores for some reason which started the 8 glasses per day myth) you're fucking dead in about 3 days**. You don't even get a week.
We all (I hope) intuitively understand it'd be silly for someone to worry about dying because they didn't force themselves to eat some food earlier that morning on account of not being hungry. Your body (barring obvious exceptions like aggressive chemo therapy) is not going to accidentally forget to make you hungry to the point of serious health problems
Yet the bottled water company propaganda has so thoroughly fucked with some of your heads that you believe something much, much more vital to living is going to somehow fail to throw off extreme thirst alarms long before you're anywhere close to in trouble***.

That's not misleading. Pissing out your electrolytes is a major problem caused by excessive water consumption. It's usually what sends people with polydipsia to the hospital before anything else. It's also literally what kills all those people who die from "water intoxication" FYI:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication
>Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning, hyperhydration, overhydration, or water toxemia is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside safe limits by excessive water intake.

Salt and potassium would help but I have no idea why you would want to drink excessive amounts of water and take extra salt and potassium to balance it out instead of just not drinking excessive amounts of water.
>salt merchant
You're talking about salt being a good thing so calling someone "lying salt merchant" here makes no sense.
Also none of this is misleading or dishonest. That's always been the definition of water intoxication. Just because electrolyte depletion is the mechanism for water intoxication doesn't mean it shouldn't be called water intoxication. That's like claiming it's misleading to say someone died of a gunshot because what "really killed them" was arterial bleeding.
