I think the most popular ones are the American grilled cheese and the UK cheese toastie. You do like them right? What kind of cheese is your preferred style for them? Do you like them lightly cooked, very toasty, or maybe even cold?Butter or mayo? Do you add anything else to make it a bit more interesting?

merica cheese and swiss are the best combo for me. fry on the swiss side first because it takes longer to melt.

I like them lightly cooked, just until the cheese is warm and soft but not totally melted. Butter, no real reason to use mayo, just put the butter in the pan if it's too cold to spread on the bread. Sometimes I'll put a little cheese on the outside of the bread after it's toasted, then flip it again and give it 30 seconds or so on each side to crisp the cheese on the outside. I usually have cheddar cheese so that's what I use but almost any is fine. I like to dip it in mustard, and sometimes add sauteed onions/mushrooms.

>IT'S NOT GRILLED CHEESE WITH ONIONS/MUSHROOMS, IT HAS TO BE ONLY CHEESE
the majority of the filling is still cheese

I use olive oil actually it may not offer the flavor butter does but they toast better if you ask me.
I do them lightly toasted to make sure the cheese melts I microwave them for 30 seconds first. I will add lunch meat to them as well. One combo I like is Havarti and really thinly sliced peppers.
