basically any craft brewer, all Lagunitas beers taste like anything else. That citrus one they do is okay, and Lil Sumpin is good only because it has such a high alcohol content.

lagunitas is Heineken and neither are good
their willetized coffee stout was awesome when it still came in six packs for $12 and not a giant 22oz bottle for like ten

Sierra Nevada. Lagunitas does still put out good beer, contrary to what the twats on here might say, but Sierra Nevada is the most consistent large scale craft brewery in the US right now. Considering their size, quality, and price points I'd say they're the best in the US

>> No.12335189

>>12335154
I guess thats one reason why i like is the good value. Fuck maximus is 11 bucks for a six pack. Ive never paid anymore then 14 and that was for the high abv. They have 11 up to like 14%. Different flavors.
>>12335169
Youre probably right. I want to try more independent beer companies.

Also: tap>bottles>cans right?

>> No.12335203

>>12335189
Cans are better than bottles because no light can get to the beer, although the beer may pick up a metallic taste vs a bottle. Cans are more consistent overall so usually a better bet to get the feel of a beer.

Also, Maximus is not very good at all and if you're buying beer for the ABV you need to move to malt liquor. Just because Lagunitas makes particularly boozy stuff doesn't mean it's good, and I've had more enjoyable sixers of stuff that tasted similar but was less alcoholic.
Lagunitas still has a few good varieties but Maximus is not one.

>> No.12335204

>>12335189
Tap is the best, but bottles>can is a meme, they're pretty much the same..
UNLESS you plan on aging a beer, see: stouts, lambics, or sours. You don't want to age in a can.
And when it comes to bottles don't buy the fucking green ones unless it's a good lambic that only comes in green bottles. Light penetrates green bottles easier than brown which causes it to skunk

Also if you plan on homebrewing 100% go for bottles canning is just NOT worth it.

>> No.12335232

If you want to get more into craft beer, look for Sierra Nevada or Dogfish Head at your store of choice. Both brands make great beer and a wide variety of styles. Personally, I prefer Sierra Nevada, but if you like IPAs like it sounds, Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA is still one of the most perfect beers of that style that's widely produced. Figure out what styles of beer you want and go from there, some brewers are better at one or the other, i.e., Sam Adams which makes a number of IPAs which are all pretty good IMO, especially their hazy/New England IPAs, but they excel at lagers and lighter ales.

So, Great Lakes Brewing has a beer called Dortmunder Gold. And I really love the style of taste. Its not bitter like a pilsner, but "gold" in a more tasty, bready sense. Does anyone know of any normal American lagers that would have a similar taste? A kind that I could easily buy in a cheaper 12-24 pack? Basically just an American lager with that nice gold flavor without the bitterness of a pilsner.

There are about five thousand brands in Germany. It's a nation that's about the size of Texas. Weihenstephaner is one of their larger industrial beers produced at similar scale as something like PBR. Not to say that it's bad or that production at such scale is bad either but there is incredible variety and calling it the Budweiser of Germany is pretty apt. Not the person to ask as I have pretty shallow knowledge of their beer industry. I'm sure someone else can help either here or on beeradvocate.

I'm giving you a few that are very distinct:

>Hövels
Advertised as "bitter beer", this is one of my personal favorites. It's not bitter so much as having a strong taste without the malty notes found in black beer.

>Schwarzer Steiger
Speaking of black beers, this is my favorite one. Strong taste, with the name hinting at Dresden's past as a city of heavy industry, this one can also be turned into a very refreshing beverage by adding lime juice.

>Brinkhoff's
This one's from my home town. That's the onely reason I'm including it, honestly. It's a good Pilsner.

>Jever
My roommate loves it, I drink it with lime juice only. This one manages a very crisp taste, similar to Kirin Ichiban, but is pretty damn bitter. If you like that sorta thing, Jever's a safe bet.

Try these. When it comes to German "craft beer", you're usually paying out the ass for nothing. We have a wide variety of beers as it is.

Depends what's up.

If I'm buying beer to have with family or friends who drink macrolagers (and/or listen to country music, and/or watch NASCAR), then yeah, I'll grab 24 of something cheap and innocuous. If I'm buying for myself, or friends and family who like craft beer, or trying new things, then I'll snag a bunch of whatever stands out, or hit a brewery on my way.

I'd rather pay a bit extra to help get the locals up to big-league production. The more they make, and the more important they are in the game (collectively), the more they can lower their production costs and rally against the unfairly high taxation on their products and production.
