why do craft beers sometimes taste radically differently on tap than from a bottle but sometimes not even though they're both allegedly unfiltered

>> No.12307222

>>12307203
breweries use different equipment to can/bottle/keg beer. often kegging beer is the most simple/foolproof while canning and bottling lines can be more operator dependent. either way beer can experience "scrubbing" if it's handled more roughly and can lose flavor. a bad operator or machine can lead to higher dissolved oxygen levels.

your best bet for drinking consistant, quality beer is to drink local and make a point of drinking fresh beer. don't buy anything on the shelves (light or hoppy) thats over 3 months old or stored warm/room temp. ask for recommendations at beer bars or when going to breweries look at their social media and drink whatever's the newest. beer is perishable and always best stored cold and drank fresh.

I feel like this is to blame for all the retarded high school and college kids getting themselves killed by slamming 4loko, if moderate alcohol consumption wasn't treated as some degenerate and dangerous practice, people would have a more sensible idea of how to approach it instead of solely using it as a tool to get fucked up.

How many beers a week do you guys drink?

Im pretty young (22) and have been averaging in the 20/25-50/60 range for the past year and a half. No weight gains but i'm afraid i'm walking the thin alcoholic line (do most of my drinking alone at the end of the day just because I enjoy a little beer buzz whilst browsing the webs, parents are alcoholics). Been contentiously lowering my intake past few days with the help of some weed, only drank 4 since Wednesday and plan on 2-4 tonight followed by nothing tomorrow (may get boozed up Monday as i'm going out to a baseball game). Here's a question:
>Do you think that the technique matters when pouring Guiness beer?

I've lived in Dublin for a few years, I've poured Guiness for people in a bar before while temping for my barman friend. I've drank it many ways and poured it many ways, and while all the Irish I've met insist on the rout pour and letting it rest, I find the whole charade to be utter marketing bullshit.

The beer tastes the-fucking-same regardless of how you pour it.
And fuck, if you want to have a sip while it's "settling" go right ahead, it doesn't fucking matter.

Thoughts?

I think it has to do with the craft beer boom. Suddenly, your uncle who is drinking a 6 pack of budlight on an average night is downing 8%'ers at the same rate and then from there it just spirals. People's drinking habits stay the same whilst the alcohol gets more potent.

I don't really think you can become a full blown alcoholic from drinking standard 4-5% beer. You'd have to be drinking 18-24 a night for a good bit before having serious Withdrawal's, but I again though I can't imagine someone having the will power to down that many in a average night.

There's a brewery local to me that makes a "Belgian Strong Dark Ale" that tastes seriously vinous. Check that style on BeerAdvocate and see if there are any local to you.
Read the reviews first because they can vary from super malty to super fruity, spicy, or vinegary.

Honestly, Tulip if you're a normal person or Teku if you're a goddamn hipster.
I own several glasses and these work with the most styles.

The point is that they're kind of like a wine glass, so the heat of your hand doesn't warm your beer, but other than that it functions like a tulip.
They look very pretentious, and I only own one because my local brewery gave me one as a gift for picking up a case on release day ($82 well spent). I'd never buy one by itself.
I also happened to fall for the "Spiegelau IPA Glass" meme because some anon was shilling it and it's the gayest thing ever. It's the same as a tulip but it holds a full 16oz can. I use it occasionally for when I want to pour a whole pint and not bring my can with me going outside, so it wasn't a complete loss.
Most standard Teku/Tulips only hold 12-14oz to the brim, keep that in mind.

true, but heavier beers just fill me up faster. i dont really have it in me to be an alcoholic honestly. never understand how people could comfortably throwback a sixer, even if it's just bud light.

I notice that when beers are listed as "gold" I tend to really enjoy them.Does anyone know what style of beer "golds" tend to be? I can't tell if they are moreso american lagers, german helles, or pilsners. I think I just like the idea of a gold beer that tastes smooth and easy and flavorful.

"Gold" is simply a descriptor. Ales can be gold, Saison's can be gold, hell even gold stouts exist. If you're looking for smooth and easy drinking "gold" beer, you're looking for lagers or pilsners. While saison/farmhouse ales tend to be funkier and hit a bit harder on the palette, but can drastically vary between breweries. Also maybe look for things that are labeled Session or Table beers. Generally lower ABV and smooth easy drinking beers.

I am a fairly light guy (150) and can throw back 6 easily over the course of a few hours, especially if i'm liking the taste of that beer. At social settings I can throw back twice that in a couple hours regardless of the taste. Just depends on my mood and how full I am going into it really
