I've been seeing a lot of blogs and quotes from bartenders talking about tequila like it's a fancy sipping whiskey, like it's the next big thing. Every tequila I've ever tried has tasted like bile. Is this a con or is there really a tequila out there that's pleasant to sip? What are the qualities of a good tequila?

Some people DO like sipping tequila, apparently there are some that are decent enough to do so

however the only tequila I've ever tasted has been bottom shelf swill that's difficult to even shoot, so that's the extent of my knowledge on the matter

I should add that it's also probably an acquired taste for most people, just like whiskey, so I wouldn't go out buying an expensive tequila expecting to find it very pleasant

I have not had a high grade tequila, but from sipping both $40~ tequila and $50~ mezcal, I much prefer mezcal and think it has a much more complex flavor profile, there's a ton of smokiness and a bit of earthiness like a peaty whiskey, it coats your throat like a really good whiskey and it's just really fucking good, i'd go mezcal if you want the single malt experience.

Whisky apart from peatbombs isn‘t an aquired taste. All the various flavors you‘ll find in it are considered pleasant on their own.

I don't know, it took me time to get used to the flavors you typically find in scotches. In fact the one kind of scotch that I found myself loving from the beginning are the peatbombs.

The alcohol burn also was something to get used to, but I don't know if that should be considered.

Like all things it's not for everyone. I'll so shots of it, mix it with lime and tonic water or pour a lot of it with regular ass sodas. Don't fall for any hype train bullshit. Just enjoy it. I've never paid more than 22 bucks for 750ml of pic related and everyone I've shared it with liked it as well. Fuck Patron, it's overrated, overpriced and marketed to shitheels. Fuck Cuervo, uncles told it was good back in the day and now it's Wal-Mart tier shit. Hornitos and El Jimador are for when you're on a budget.

Bashing Cuervo is such a neophyte move. Hornitos is made by Sauza which makes just as much awful 51% crap as Cuervo. Cuervo also makes some excellent tequilas as you would expect considering what kinds of resources they have at their disposal. "Cuervo" is just the name of the company, what you frat boys mean when you say Cuervo is actually Cuervo Especial.

tequila taste absolutely okay
i usually look for the agave profile, and usually good ones have a hint of spice and a bit of sourness

it's below whisky, gin and rum for me but it's not bad

there's good sipping tequila. i've been getting into it lately. go for the reposado or anejo expressions rather than the blanco/silver ones, at least at first
espolon is okay and relatively cheap
don julio and herradura are really good
haven't tried mezcal yet. it's not very abundant here (aus)

I enjoyed Tres agaves when I tried it. The taste was pretty balanced and complex.

Just the other day I tried cazadores reposado. It was interesting, to say the least. Was very sweet, kind of brandy-like.

Soooo....There is tequila to sip, but it still tastes like shit. And here I am taking shots from patron, Jose, and this Costco tequila. Honestly, I've been drinking tequila my entire life. (I'm 32) It's really not a sipping liquor. Even the expensive ones. No spirit is meant to sip to be even more honest. Just mix tequila with a chaser and be careful of having too much sugar with it. Sugar is the number one reason why people associate Tequila with crazy ass hangovers. It's a fine balance of non-sugar based chasers and water. Don't get me wrong, I do get hangovers but not on death's door type deals. It's just a slight buzz the next morning. Tequila is one of the best liquors I've had. It just settles right with me and makes me feel fucking great. A lot of people over do it too. But then again, I might be an alcoholic since I'm so used to it and it treats me right over anything else I've had.

The best tequila I had was at a bar and it was about $8 for a shot I couldn't tell you the brand but it went down like water. I recently tried this liquor called arrack which is like a fruity tequila made from palm flowers and it's excellent though.

>talking about tequila like it's a fancy sipping whiskey
The aging process for tequila and whisky is very similar. They both let it sit in oak barrels. The difference is US bourbons use new charred oak, while a lot of tequila and scotch makers buy second-hand barrels from the US and age them in those used barrels, and also the amount of time it ages. So you do get similar hints of oak in both liquors, although the the profile is completely different because the sugars are extracted from corn/rye/barley vs agave. (BTW I'm only talking about reps and anejos here. Your regular silver is not aged.)

>Every tequila I've ever tried has tasted like bile
If you don't like the taste of agave, then chances are you won't like a tequila even if it has been aged. It took me a while to get used to it, just like cilantro. Just use a good 100% blue agave and start with mixed drinks. No need to be fancy. I started out drinking palomas -- grapefruit soda & tequila on ice -- and it's still my favorite tequila drink today.

>What are the qualities of a good tequila?
100% blue agave

>>12303963
>it's Wal-Mart tier shit
You must have been drinking Gold mixto. Cuervo Tradicional is pretty good, as is Espolon, Lunazul, and el Jimador. They're all priced about the same here.
