Nah, you are right.
Thing about old school muscle was that you needed to actually eat big to get it. Now you can formulate diet so autistically and use techniques that make you weaker (water weight shedding, cutting, steroids etc etc) to get that no fat muscle definition.
The old muscle men had to actually function in real life, and that meant eating a lot, and relying on your body having fat stores to power that mass.
Muscle didn't mean shit in the old days if you couldn't use it for 12-16 hours straight.
Form over functionality as the world goes on, who would have guessed?
