Fancy restaurants and the people who eat from them try as hard as possible to define themselves in opposition to poor people food. So while a poor person restaurant like a chinese buffet would involve enormous servings piled on a small plate, rich people restaurants take the tiniest little artistic displays of food and emphasize the novelty and delicacy status of it with a contrastingly large, mostly empty plate.

„d.“ for pence comes from Roman coin denarius. 1912 pound is worth over 100 pounds today, penny was 1/240th of a pound back then, so 3 and 6 pence then is roughly equivalent to £1.25 and £2.50 or $1.60 and $3.20 respectively.

The most expensive restaurant I have ever eaten at was about $650 for 3 people, and it was amazing. The wine, the food, the service, just superb. The taste of the food is an experience that does things to your tastebuds you've never experienced before. I have never had a more perfect tasting piece of fish or venison.

With that being said, although I can afford "fine dining" I genuinely choose not to. Despite living in one of the most expensive and beautiful cities in Canada/the world, we don't have any Michelin starred restaurants. We have $60+ a plate restaurants but for the most part, with few exceptions they are sort of underwhelming. I prefer to just go to a $30-$40/ main course restaurant. Food/service is good, and you don't feel like you're getting completely fucked up the ass by Jamal and the boys.
