>bought a cheap shitty bottle of Chardonnay because it was on sale and I’m trying to understand the differences between grape varietals
>it’s slightly fizzy
Has it gone bad? Should I toss it?

>inb4 can’t ruin cheap wine/it was always bad/ you’re a pleb

you're in no danger, you just got some shitty wine. the fizziness in champagne was originally seen as a defect

Is it a defect in this particular bottle though or to be expected from shit wine?

Some white wines have a natural fizz. Depends on the original grapes. For example there are Italian and Portuguese whites that have a very mellow natural fizz.

If it doesn’t taste like vinegar you’re fine.

Some whites (particularly dry varieties) can seem fizzy.

Also, don't go too cheap, sometimes a bad bottle can be so confused it doesn't seem like the variety you're trying to know. They have to be pretty cheap though

Bottle fizz doesn't end up in cheap wine by accident. The kind of factory producing that stuff resembles an oil refinery with all the steps the ingredients go through. The reason that kind of wine isn't considered desirable is that it has no "craftsmanship", it's the wine equivalent of an injection molded plastic statue vs a hand carved statue. It's an aesthetic objection rather than an objection to the literal physical integrity of the product.

When white wine is bottled, CO2 often gets added. If they add too much, it becomes fizzy. I'm not talking about sparkling wine, but regular wine. If it's not sour, you can drink it normal.

spritzy is what it's generally called it's common enough in white wines and can desirable a lot of German wines tend to have it due to their high residual sugar. As long as you don't see a cloudy bit of sediment at the bottom of the bottle it isn't likely a wine fault.
