Not to derail the thread, but how expensive are all of those American brands in Australia?
Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy domestic stuff?

They look pretty good. I think you could probably fill your jars a bit more, though.
Overcrowding is less of an issue than you'd think. What's your brine like?

4 cups of water, 2 cups of vinegar, two tablespoons of salt and one teaspoon of sugar. I added a bit of celery salt an dill weed as well.

Hope you have better luck than my friend, OP. Made six big jars of pickles, was afraid to taste himself after two weeks and I confirmed his fear. They were to salty to even eat. The deer seem to like them though.

Jealous OP. Did you use the standard cucumbers or the English ones?

they're called cocktail cucumbers. I got them at costco. Hopefully they turn out. They're pretty small.

My mom does a lot of preserve and tomato canning, but when she tried to make pickles for the first time in around a decade, they were like that too. Could have been great to chop up like a relish as an ingredient for other things, but she made way too much to feasibly use.
I think that's one of those lessons you best learn by screwing up. It's always a good idea to take notes and make small batches with some variation to find out what works and what doesn't for the first time.

The problem I think is that he followed some "8 day" meme recipe instead of making trad pickles. The guy lives by low and slow for meats but wanted to rush pickles. Damn shame. Would have made an awesome compliment to the ribs he worked on for 10hrs.

How do you go about making traditional pickles. Just curious.

And yes, he should have made one jar on a new recipe instead of investing everything into some single mom blog recipe lol

i tried to make pickled cucumber once but it got all mushed and soft. i think the shops just don't have the right type of cucumber where I live.

>> No.12201409

there you go - everything you need is in your photo - just add the trail mix, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pepper and you wil have some kick ass pickles

>> No.12201415

are these pasteurized? also, way too little seasoning for the volume

I followed the directions and boiled everything. Should I have added more salt or do you mean more dill and garlic? Cuz I thought I added too much.
