A Negroni is equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and campari. You can easily substitute any of the ingredients with either a different spirit or amaro. This is what makes the cocktail so based. Its always balanced and tastes delicious.

1.5 oz Mezcal (sub for gin)
1.5 oz Ancho Reyes Chipotle liquor (sub for vermouth)
1.5 oz Aperol (sub for campari)
3 dashes spiced orange bitters

Avoid the cheap vermouths like Martini and Cinzano. My favorite is Carpano Antica Formula. It has a very rich flavor, sweet but balanced. I can only find it in 1.75l bottles, but it tastes good enough on its own that you'll finish a bottle before it goes sour. If you don't want as sweet, try Punt e Mes.
