The cast iron is literally the most useful tool in my kitchen. I very rarely use other pans now, being able to put it in the oven is a complete game changer and cleaning it is so simple. Thank you /ck/ for convincing me to get one.

Are there any advantages cast iron has over steel pans?

Lots of thermal mass for a low price. Steel pans are garbage, though. Get a tri-ply steel-aluminum-steel pan instead.

It will last forever. Your great great great grandchildren could inherit your cast iron pan if you were cruel and stupid enough to breed. If it gets neglected and rusts, it's easily recoverable. It's indestructible.

For all that CI is fucking amazing, it is still iron, and iron is kinda brittle when dropped.

On a completely unrelated note, my grandma has a cast aluminum pot she got half a century ago, and it's a damn shame cast aluminum isn't more common, because that thing is as nice to work with as cast iron, but far lighter.

Tomatoes don't hurt the pan that's an old wives tale. I guess theoretically repeated and intense cooking with acidic foods could strip the seasoning but that's not that hard to replace.
