I've had a poor sense of smell my entire life. Chronic congestion. Occasionally my nasal cavity clears up sometimes after a heavy night of drinking. It's amazing while it lasts. I can really smell things and breathe easily. That's my theory for why I'm always adding sauce to stuff. Tastes too bland without it.

I pretty much don't ever make a shopping list beyond notes to resupply on staple things that are running low, unless I'm cooking for a ton of people. If it's just myself or myself and my gf I pretty much just go, grab whatever produce and proteins look the best at the time, and figure out something to do with them from there. I live within easy walking distance of a really good grocery store and a few specialty places (a Korean grocer, an Italian/Greek place, a hipster 'omg organic cruelty free' nonsense place that i only visit because they get really nice produce in the summer), and like maybe 10 minutes by bus away from the farmer's market. Almost every meal is improv.

I can spend $20 a week in groceries. What should I buy?

>> No.12152816

>>12152754
Assuming you're a burger:
3 pounds of chicken (what type depends on how much the other shit costs)
1 pound beef mince
10 to 20 eggs
butter or margarine
milk
peanut butter or alternative (eg jam/marmalade)
bag of potato
bag of rice
bag of onion
cheapest puffed rice or wheat cereal
bag of flour & some dried yeast
sugar
couple cans of tinned toamto
sunflower oil if you need some
carrots
apples or bananas
garlic powder
oregano
smoked paprila
salt
pepper

You have chicken 5 nights a week, and burgers the other 2. Oven bake the chicken after coating in the spices/herbs.

This might be worth more than $20 depending on where you live, but most of it is buy once and it'll last weeks. You will need to adjust things based on your own abilities. Like if you aren't going to bother baking anything you won't need flour or yeast. If you don't drink coffee or don't mind having toast every morning, you might not need much if any milk. If you don't like eggs don't get them etc.

A very simple cheap "menu" for a single day is:
Breakfast - 2 or 4 slices of toast.
Lunch - 1 or 2 sandwiches. (this is where the margarine & peanut butter or jam comes in).
Dinner - Half a pound of chicken, two cut potatoes & 1 cut onion, oven baked. Add rice or boiled eggs to fill it out.
Feel free to replace a breakfast or lunch with eggs on toast (however you like, boiled, scrambled, poached etc).

My most common grocery-trip staples are:
Diet tonic water
Yogurt
Fruit (usually apples, pears, and some of whatever's in season)
Vegetables (a lot of cabbage)
Deenz/tuna/some other kind of tinned fish

I also get a loaf of bread every week and a half.
