Shit Asian cooking aside, how is it that Gordon Ramsay seems to be on "dumb American" levels of cultural unawareness every single time he visits another country?

People acting like he's the best cook ever who knows everything and never makes mistakes might make him believe that he knows more than he really does.

Even here if you say the burgers he made were a little too tall you get people sperging out at you.

his Asian cooking ranges from amateur home chef to absolutely abysmal

but what stands out to me about him is how incredibly arrogant he is in the face of Asians. He seems to have no idea how to act polite. I thought traveled Brits were supposed to be cultured.

He's not arrogant at all you slant eyed beta male. Every episode of his shows where he visits a non western country he's nothing but deferential and self deprecating. The reason you think he's "arrogant" is because he has a dominant personality and other alpha male traits, which omega Asian males see as "arrogant" because they're not as irreverent.

kek, nope

you're imagining he's being a nice guy because he does what would be acceptable in London. Except he's not in London.

Every single scene shows him being a different kind of idiot abroad.

Except he's not wrong. Ramsay isn't rude at all. Case in point is the Malaysia episode where he spends the entire ep kissing the ass of the Chinese Malaysian mother, asking if he can become her son and learn from her etc.

The issue here is one of a cultural difference. To Chinese and Korean people politeness is about kowtowing to those above you in the hierarchy while kicking down at those below you. To westerners politeness is about general civility to everyone unless they've given you a reason to think otherwise.

Note that this is also why Asians in western countries get so angry. They're not used to societies where they aren't on top so it eats away at them inside.

True. I know that chinks are world renowned for their impeccable etiquette and manners and that everyone else is uncouth by comparison.

PRC Chinese and Malaysians aren't the same. I know all rook same to you, but you'd throw an autism fit if someone went to your town and did shit that they thought was acceptable to Greek or Spanish people.

>>12143083
His arrogance is in assuming that everything he does is appropriate just because it fits the London definition of being decent. At no point does he stop and think that people might see him as an asshole. He's an outright dick to the monk chief in OP's video, acting like he's uncultured swine for assuming that he would make "macaroni" for the pm, telling him about a bikini girl pinup when he gets the roll-up pen from him. Then makes fun of Buddhism, followed by shit loads of complaints about vegetarianism IN A FUCKING BUDDHIST MONASTERY and tells the head chef that her food isn't very good while in her kitchen.

If you can't see why any of this is rude as hell, maybe it's because you don't have a passport.

>To Chinese and Korean people politeness is about kowtowing to those above you in the hierarchy while kicking down at those below you. To westerners politeness is about general civility to everyone unless they've given you a reason to think otherwise.

This is a dumb simplification. You're conflating "politeness" and "socially acceptable." Politeness in the East in general is about helping the other person save face. If someone gives you shitty food, you tell them it's fine or great. It's not all that hard to understand. In Asia everything works on credit and reputation, so if you insult people openly then it hurts their reputation, which can cascade into ruining their business, making it harder for people to do business with their family, etc. If it all sounds very Jewish, you're probably right, since a lot of Asian cities were built on the backs of merchants.

The Western system of credit is just a joke where people keep supporting shitty companies and celebrities over and over again because they don't care about face or reputation, most of us just respect people for being on TV or having a lot of money, or just buy the shit our friends show us on Facebook because of NPC mentality. Chinks in particular understand that reputation matters, so they don't take kindly to people hurting their reputation in public. In fact, there are significant anti-libel laws in South Korea because businesses will fall quickly if people talk shit about how they're run and attach their name to their criticisms. It's also why Japanese service is so good and their products have such a low failure rate, because they'd rather die than risk losing reputation for themselves and everyone they're associated with.

NTA, but I'm Greek. I don't find Gordon arrogant. Rude, possibly. Then again head chefs are absolute hard asses wherever you go, you'd know that if you've worked as a line cook. But arrogant? Not at all.

>>12143142
Chinese face ethics are stupid. Any system where ostentatiously displaying wealth is viewed as "gaining face" in front of your community is poison.

>Then makes fun of Buddhism

Newflash my Asian-American friend, the vast majority of Chinese these days don't give a fuck about Buddhism. It's not some "ancient, esoteric wisdom" to them that necessitates reverence, like you ABCtards living in the USA, viewing it through the lens of wuxia movies and the like seem to think. They literally DO NOT CARE. They're totally irreligious and atheistic. In fact the PRC Chinese is just as clueless about it as the average westerner is. It's honestly bizarre how ABCs and Kyopos have these 19th century orientalist ideas about their homelands.

>>12143142
>Politeness in the East in general is about helping the other person save face

It's about face full stop. Which is why I said it's explicitly hierarchical. It's why Chinese people act like forensic accountants about your salary, your university and so on. It's all a way of consciously placing you into a hierarchy they have tucked away in their head. Those above them = People they show deference and politeness to, those beneath them = No need.

>most of us just respect people for being on TV or having a lot of money

Are you kidding? The average Chinese places far more stock on someone's net worth as their measure than the average westerner does.

>Japan

Japan is distinct from the Asian mainland and has been since the end of the Heian period.

>>12143178
Correct. Ramsay gets angry and frustrated if people make mistakes, but he does that to everyone and anyone, barring kids and old grannies. That's the distinction.
