It's gonna suck the first few times you make it.

Cook the pasta in as little water as possible so your starch is as concentrated as possible. The starch helps the water and oil emulsify and from a creamy sauce. If you end up with an oily dish you've fucked it up. You can use the pasta water to help with the cooking of the garlic to keep it from burning.

Watch a bunch of youtube videos on it until you are able to tell when the half of them that are fucking it up are fucking it up, because most people fuck it up. It can be a delicious staple but you need to really 'get' the method and you need to be able to troubleshoot the sauce on the fly.
