It's really interesting, he gets invited into some upper middle class people's house, who tell him about how the real persian cuisine exists only in people's homes not restaurants because it's so labour intensive (they have a kitchen servant), and that the whole 'persian' cultural identity happens more behind closed doors, and then he also talks a lot about how surreal it is being in a place were everyone is super freindly to him and smiling at him in the street and stuff, more friendly than anywhere he's been before, yet there are death to america billboards in the street too, that contrast. How we view them as Evil and they're told Americans are evil but in reality most regular Iranians admire america in many ways and are always freindly on an interpersonal leve.
and he interviews an Iranian/american journalist about wider social and political issues and repression and stuff.

It's really fascinating. Iran is a fascinating place. Food is a good lense through which to examine a culture. I've never seen a more interesting portrait of the contradictions of modern Iran.
